"Drugs definitely give you an alternate perspective. Your consciousness is like a radio frequency. If you turn the dial, all those radio stations are there simultaneously. You can dial in to hear what stations you want to hear. Consciousness is the same way. Through meditation, you can alter that, you can come upon an alternate reality. Drugs are a shortcut to that. the trick is to really understand the medium you use to get there.
Don Quixote was like that. He was a slave to peyote. He could really get into this alternate consciousness. His guide was peyote, but he was a slave. He couldn't get there except through that medium. There's a lot of people on heroin writing amazing music, but it's a hard way to go, because you sacrifice your life. " - The Great Reverend Maynard

be flexible so u can change with change. empty yourself! open up! after all, the usefulness of a cup is in its emptiness. I am no longer interested in systems or organizations. Organized institutes tend to produce patternized prisoners of a systematized concept, and the instructor's are often fixed in a routine. Of course, what is worse is that by imposing the members to fit a lifeless preformation, their natural growth is blocked. U cannot hurt that which is formless. The softest thing cannot be snapped and emptiness cannot be confined. Fluidity leads to interchangeability. Self-knowledge leads to awareness. Totality leads to ultimate freedom.

He believes that we should not hold onto our beliefs, which is a belief in itself. It is our beliefs that hold us together and make us what we are.

I'd say it's love, or some generalization of love, that holds us together. Belief is just a type of habit. A habit can be substituted without any major loss of identity.

Ah, but isn't the thought of "love" a belief in itself. Everyone has different beliefs on what love is.

Good point. My point is that beliefs can change without affecting the basic holding-togetherness. But you're correct that my identifying of this with the concept of love is also a belief.

In as much religion can help us shed social conditionings, so can a culturally adopted religion be in itself a form of social conditioning.

so what are "we" looking for ??? salvation submission liberation solidarity transcendence a better rebirth no rebirth life eternal everlasting sleep hope certitude fullness emptiness unity ~ ~ & maybe some acceptable answers to some of the big questions... (just a few sample Qs: where did we come from who am "i" what is "everything else" where are we going what are we supposed to do in the meanwhile is this it why is this happening when did it start when will it end who says so ?????????????) ~ ~ remember: convictions cause convicts ... if you "know" you've got the final answer, well, you tend to stop asking questions... if "you" are of "the elect" then "they" are of "the damned"... there's a "seeker" born every minute ... he who is not busy being born is busy dying... every time that wheel turns 'round, bound to cover just a little more ground... "random chance" is insufficient to explain random chance... a straight line is almost never the shortest distance between two points... short words are much slipperier than long ones... soon enough, you will know... all sentient beings have buddha-nature... all that groks is god... we are all of us alone, and we are all in this together... before abraham was, i am... nothing lasts forever... possibility is more interesting than certainty... love and jealousy are incompatible emotions... hate is not the antithesis of love; indifference is... cosmic love is ruthless... the universe is a big place, and generally it is too cold or too hot... being born human is a precious opportunity --- make the most of it... i love you... ~ ~ ~

You could always wear a different colored tie everyday... heh.
I know what you mean, man, but luckily I worked as a dishwasher with my stepbrother and my best friend, and another good friend, all three cooks, so it was always constant fun. The boss was very cool, too, so we could listen to whatever as long as the customers couldn't hear it.. once some friends were in eating and we went and sat with them, and all you could hear in that section of the restaurant was IN FLAMES, loud as fuck...
But yeah, I imagine our settings were a bit looser than yours, unfortunately. Peace.
