CHRISTMAS FORGETS MANY OF THE ELDERLY!!!!!! * 2
    #19276922 - 12/14/13 10:51 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

EDIT: Feel free to just discuss this issue generally as well! It's not just a HEY DO THIS thread, despite that I kind of made it come across that way :datass:

As we all enjoy the holiday season and plan to spend times with our friends, loved ones, and/or family, I think we should really take a moment to think about a population that is conveniently warehoused out of sight so as not to disrupt us or become burdensome: the elderly in nursing homes.

My dad was telling me about a lady who lives in a nursing home and the staff noticed she was hanging up the same Christmas cards year after year.

Her kids simply forgot about her. Not literally or outright, but they couldn't be bothered to buy a 99 cent Xmas card, write "I love you mom" and mail it with a 35 cent stamp to make their own mother's holiday happy.

THERE ARE TONS OF PEOPLE LIKE THIS, living out their last few years having been completely forgotten by the people who previously defined their lives.

So I want to challenge you to do something relatively small that will likely be one of the most joyous and meaningful things that has happened to someone vulnerable and special in YEARS...

Get a basket or cheap stocking or even just a box, and go to the dollar store or grocery store or something and buy some things that an elderly man or woman might really enjoy. Lotion, potpourri, fruit, chocolates (make sure to include some sugar-free ones!), a nice deck of cards or a good book, some stationary... be creative, but put together a cheap gift package.

(BTW, this will also let them share so they can divvy things up for others who Christmas might have missed)

Go to a local nursing home and give it to someone who looks like they might not be having the best day, or just to the first person you see.

If you want to give a gift that keeps on giving (and that gives to you too!), maybe even leave them some stamps and your address and let them know you'll write to them if you get a letter just in case they get lonely.

Imagine spending YEARS in what's basically a psych ward for old people without getting visitors, gifts, or anything... only getting what food they have there, only getting to use hospital-style soaps and shampoos, etc.

A $1 thing of cucumber-melon scented hand soap might mean the world to an old man or woman and could bring them weeks or months of joy... FOR JUST $1.

I challenge you to put together a $10-20 gift set and give it to someone that Christmas might have missed this year in a nursing home (or to a shut-in!). Post here that you did this and I will +5 the fuck out of you :crankey: lol.

Happy holidays, Shroomery! Let's make sure they're happy for everyone. :sun:

My parents own a senior care company. Every Christmas they deliver presents to under privledged seniors living in state run homes who have no family visitors. Mostly Russians lol. Its a really cool program, I've volunteered a few times.

I was surprised to see this thread but your spot on. Many people don't realize how helpless and alone many seniors are. If they dot have money for services like ours, they are sent to these pretty awful homes to die all alone. Its sad

Why were you surprised to see this thread? It's a pervasive and very real issue.

Come to think of it, I was just thinking of the nursing homes I've seen personally. I didn't even think about those that house seniors who can't pay... I'll definitely be directing my goodies to a low-end one.

Having seen a lot of this firsthand, MagicMan, what portion of the elderly do you think are being neglected by the significant people in their lives? I'm almost afraid to ask.

Luckily no one in my family is ever forgotten, we even frequently pay for family to come to our house when they don't have gas money. However my whole family including me respects the family members all year and I love that tradition, it's not seen much anymore. I'm glad to hear other are grateful for their family also

Great post and suggestion, st1llnox. I hope a few members step up and take your challenge. There's a home not far from where I live, and the wife and I are going to visit that with some Christmas cheer this year...

My step father spent the last year of his life there, and it hurt me to see the sadness in some of those peoples eyes. We tried to visit the old guy 'Bob-O' at least once or twice a week, but that wasn't always possible:sad:...

He was allowed 1 can of beer a day, and he just brightened up so much when we were there, sharing a beer, and maybe listening to a ball game,(His eye sight was almost gone), or just reminiscing about "the old days".

This beautiful song never fails to make me :crying:. Please give it a listen and open your hearts a little more this year, people...

John Prine...hello in there...

I have no idea. We deal with mostly really wealthy seniors, because the service is very expensive. I'll ask my Mom next time I talk to her though, she probably has a better idea as I'm not involved in their business.

Okay I filled a stocking with $16 worth of soap, candy, etc. and gave it to my best friend for him to give someone and we went and did it at a nursing home near our high school. It was beautiful!

I didn't anticipate this though but be warned everyone: they might think there's a catch or try to offer you money. Our lady was confused at first, but then accepted and hushedly said (almost winked verbally) that she'll go get us some money. We told her really, no catch... It's a Christmas gift and as it dawned on her and she came to believe us I saw one of the most pure faces of joy I've ever seen.

You guys won't regret doing this :sun:

Vinsue, thanks for sharing that story and those songs. I'm listening to the first song and it reminds me of my father's side of the family. It's so great people like you and your wife go out of your way to help! :sun: Doesn't surprise me coming from you, but it's noble nonetheless.

I texted this one stoner nurse I know who works at 2 nursing homes. She said it's literally 75% or more that receive NO VISITS WHATSOEVER from family. I am beyond stunned and while I'm still confident this situation can be reversed, I had no idea that this was the norm (at least in some places). It's just shocking on so many levels.

I see why China passed a law that children mustn't neglect their elderly parents. Why that would have to be necessary is beyond me though, and this is not coming from someone who feels like his parents have been doing a good job lately.

COME ON GUYS, SERIOUSLY JUST SPEND $5-10 AT THE DOLLAR STORE.

THE THING THE LADY MY BEST FRIEND GAVE HIS STOCKING TO SEEMED MOST HAPPY ABOUT WAS CUCUMBER-MELON SOAP THAT I LITERALLY PAID ONE DOLLAR FOR AND IT MIGHT HAVE MADE HER HOLIDAY SEASON!!!

I'm going to the VA hospital near me and doing volunteer work for the Christmas party for all the veterans there. I'm sure there will be a lot of older war vets there so I am pretty happy about doing it. I just have to go to bed at a decent time so I can wake up and ask how I can help.

The fuck has been +5'ed out of you.

Or, you have been +5 the fuck out of'ed.

When there're that many words, working with the tense is tricky but I admire that! :sun:

Elderly in hospitals... hopefully they get more attention from their loved ones, but this could also represent a situation where they could still be prone to isolation while being in a MUCH worse setting (and likely set of circumstances!). Way to take care of this! :kaneclap:

I think I'm the one actually benefiting from it as well. I'm sure most of them will be happy to have people showing them appreciation at a time when everything feels so cold. But they all are treasure troves of information (anyone older is really) but I think older war vets are really interesting to talk to. It doesn't take much time or effort on my part and its mutually beneficial IMO.

But I think I might also look around and see if there is anything else I can do at other places.

Jeez SOOO freaking true. They inherited some spurious things, to be sure (some may still harbor latent racism, for example), but nobody has experienced more or has more to share than those who are older.

That's what's boggling me the most: many of us realize this, yet we just put them conveniently out of sight and wait for them to 'go away'. Our society has such dumb practices on a lot of things, perhaps this one the most :smbfacepalm:

I don't think its just with the elderly.. I think most people try and avoid things that can be inconvenient, cause pain or otherwise be difficult because they try and feel those types of emotions as little as possible. For example, like not reading the news because all you see are mass shootings and terrorist attacks, you eventually get numb to it to some degree and try and avoid hearing about it as much as possible.. People try and remain as detached as possible most of the time, much more so now then it was in the past. Not only that but the vast majority of people now communicate through social networking which only gives the appearance of actually socializing. Its all about themselves with most everyone.

I do it too, to some extent and often have to check myself. But the majority of people don't want to think about it.

Man I'm in one of those irrational binds right now; I'm worried my opportunity to research with this well-known dude is gone because I got busy and fell out of touch so I'm avoiding contacting him because I'm afraid I'm going to find out I no longer have the job I haven't been doing. Did this at my last research gig too but there were circumstances outside my control (And I eventually lost that because they couldn't know when I'd be even in the same town). I'm going to get uncomfortable. I feel like I needed to read that. Also I feel I mentioned this in another thread but I don't remember if it was in my first reply that got lost before I submitted it or the one I posted.
