Her kids simply forgot about her. Not literally or outright, but they couldn't be bothered to buy a 99 cent Xmas card, write "I love you mom" and mail it with a 35 cent stamp to make their own mother's holiday happy.

It's really sad man.. Sad but true.

I think I'm the one actually benefiting from it as well. I'm sure most of them will be happy to have people showing them appreciation at a time when everything feels so cold. But they all are treasure troves of information (anyone older is really) but I think older war vets are really interesting to talk to. It doesn't take much time or effort on my part and its mutually beneficial IMO.

But I think I might also look around and see if there is anything else I can do at other places.

Jeez SOOO freaking true. They inherited some spurious things, to be sure (some may still harbor latent racism, for example), but nobody has experienced more or has more to share than those who are older.

That's what's boggling me the most: many of us realize this, yet we just put them conveniently out of sight and wait for them to 'go away'. Our society has such dumb practices on a lot of things, perhaps this one the most :smbfacepalm:

I don't think its just with the elderly.. I think most people try and avoid things that can be inconvenient, cause pain or otherwise be difficult because they try and feel those types of emotions as little as possible. For example, like not reading the news because all you see are mass shootings and terrorist attacks, you eventually get numb to it to some degree and try and avoid hearing about it as much as possible.. People try and remain as detached as possible most of the time, much more so now then it was in the past. Not only that but the vast majority of people now communicate through social networking which only gives the appearance of actually socializing. Its all about themselves with most everyone.

I do it too, to some extent and often have to check myself. But the majority of people don't want to think about it.

Man I'm in one of those irrational binds right now; I'm worried my opportunity to research with this well-known dude is gone because I got busy and fell out of touch so I'm avoiding contacting him because I'm afraid I'm going to find out I no longer have the job I haven't been doing. Did this at my last research gig too but there were circumstances outside my control (And I eventually lost that because they couldn't know when I'd be even in the same town). I'm going to get uncomfortable. I feel like I needed to read that. Also I feel I mentioned this in another thread but I don't remember if it was in my first reply that got lost before I submitted it or the one I posted.

BUT YEAH MORE NICE THINGS FOR OLDER PEOPLE :kingcrankey: WE DOIN THIS OR WHAT???
