Just found out my current laptops hard drive is fried, so I'm shopping for a new one. I have a grand to spend give or take a hundred, maybe two. My Dad is really pushing Samsung for some reason, how are their laptops? All suggestions and advice welcome!
Thanks guys

Yeah they are bit pricey but I did spend $1500 on a mac book pro. best decision I made. I'm not computer savvy and all my prior computers acquired viruses and so far my Mac has not. I know there's a lot of debate but Idc.

Aren't those gaming machines? Are they very practical for a college student? I want a pretty slim one in size, but I'll check them out online thanks. I didn't know you could get one for that cheap. I had figured Alienwares closer to $2000.

I took it to geek squad and they ran tests on it, said the hard drive broken. It won't even start up..
Which is weird because it was working fine the day before and I didn't drop it

Er If it won't post it is in all likely the mobo or the memory cards and in a rare instance the power supply. .

Yeah hard drives just die on their own sometimes. You could always just replace it if you weren't set on a whole new computer. SSD is a good choice over a conventional hard drive unless you really need lots of storage.

i was under the impression SSD dies faster than regular HDD's. If your going to get an HDD, just make sure its at least 7200 RPM, not 5200 like some laptops.

I've only dealt with one Samsung laptop, I kind of hated it honestly.
I'd go for a convertible honestly(laptop/tablet), IMO they're the best, great battery life, pretty good specs, touchscreen, you can use it as a tablet as well as a laptop, etc... Very good for a college student.
Other than that I reccomend a higher end Dell, they're pretty good machines, and their customer service is great IMO, if anything breaks on it they send a technician out to your house to fix it.

I have heard that too, but speed wise SSD definitely wins. The choice depends a lot on your priorities of course.

I just looked a little, that one does seem to be pretty hard to find for cheap, I only checked newegg, ebay, & amazon though.
I see plenty of othe ativ series pc's though for some reason.
but that looks like a pretty nice pc though, both specs wise & looks-wise.
I'd snag one up if it's the one you want.

I just got this, http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y-series/y410p/ , at the beginning of my semester. I am really happy with it. and compare the specs of this laptop to any one, this one will win on price (expect for maybe weight and its a 5400 rpm hdd). Dont do samsung, they are very meh. and definitely do NOT get alienware, those are completely overpriced pieces of shit.

I hated my my toshiba, it kept fucking up on me and I would have to send it in, wait tfor them to "fix" it, get it back, realize it was still not right, send it back, etc... and this continued until I just gave up.
My dell had a few problems too, but they actually sent a technician out to my house to fix it, and it was always in a timely manner.

asus is definitely better than toshiba overall. while dell sucks and is over priced and filled with bloatware, the company does do a good job with customer services.

I got mine for a good price because I got a student discount, it was well under the price for anything else with it's specs at the time.
BTW OP, did you check out if your school has any discount programs for laptops?

You want something thin and light to use as a student for general use, not gaming or anything?
Macbook Air hands down. Fantastic machines, they get 13 hours of battery life and weigh under 3 pounds.

Do not get windows 8 for the love of god, unless you're getting something with a touch pad.
Unless you enjoy not booting to desktop
http://www.howtogeek.com/145984/Â ; Pretty much sums up why windows 8 is not useful. 8 is well made but it's designed for a fucking tablet user.
As to the hardware, anything with a brand is going to cost more money. I would personally buy an Acer if I didn't have unlimited funds.

Windows 8 is actually pretty nice once you get used to it, granted it is better with a touch screen.
The pc he is planning on getting has a touch screen, if I remember correctly.

The Samsung Series 9 laptops/ultrabooks are pretty nice. I have a friend that has one and loves it. I am currently in the market for a new notebook as well and this one gave me wood.
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/xps-15-9530/pd
The screen is 3200X1800 pixels and is a touch responsive--perfect for Windows 8. It has 16gigs of ram and 2GB stand alone video card.
It's a little outta your price range but I can't imagine being disappointed with it.

The Lenovo Yoga 2 looks far nicer than that Dell.
I still would recommend a Macbook Air above anything else though for a light user, Macbook Pro for a power user.

Thanks for the heads up. That Lenovo is a nice computer. I had not yet seen that model--and it's cheaper than the Dell.

I'd start by asking yourself what will you do with your laptop, what types of programs/applications you'll be using etc. As a non-gamer, when I thought about this question, I realized everything I needed to do could be done with a $400 laptop.

It can but $400 laptops are:
- built like shit. Will break pretty quickly - have absolutely horrific trackpads - bad battery life
It really depends on what you want out of your computer, but all of those shortcomings are pretty shitty IMO. That being said I'm pretty biased being a software developer - I put a lot of emphasis on having a good machine. If you use your computer < 2 hours a day you can probably get away with a $400 laptop. If you use it 6-8+, you should probably invest in a better computer.

You think? I've had two gateway laptops over the last 7 years with no issues, a Lenovo, and a dell and none have had any issues. You can find hp, dells, and gateways for below $400 at Walmart. I'd trust most brand names, but I have pretty basic computing needs.

The trackpads are absolutely junk on everything I have seen but Macs. I've heard some of the newer laptops like the Yoga 2 have good trackpads but I haven't seen one.
The Macbook Air gets 13 hours of battery life - a $400 laptop from Walmart might get 3.

Get an older, used laptop off of ebay that is build with better components rather than getting a new POS, new laptop. Just my opinion, but I got a brand new dell for $400 like 6 months ago and its built shittier than any other computer I have ever owned.
Apple isn't well made either, they rape you for the components they sell you. They might be made better than a piece of shit entry level laptop, but not a higher end laptop that costs the same as an apple. A lot of what you are paying for is advertising and OS X.

I couldn't disagree more. There are no laptops with trackpads even remotely equivalent in quality to Macs. The newest round of Windows 8 laptops look pretty decent, but none of them are getting the kind of battery life Apple laptops are.

What did you really expect for $400?
You get what you pay for.
Also, fuck apple, they make you pay high-end prices for mediocre, at best, machines.

You think apple is cornering the market on trackpad technology? I never bought a TV because I really liked how the remote control fit into my asshole, I sure wouldn't spend an extra $500 cause I like the trackpad...
Also, I expected more for $400 than I got. I didn't expect much, but I expected something that doesn't feel like I can snap it in half over my head. It does the job though, so I didn't return it.

Yeah the Samsung ATIV book 8 I think I'm getting says 7 hours battery life, and it has some powerful hardware so thats pretty good. The ATIV book 9 looks amazing but that's 1,800 after tax. I'm looking into the student discount, do I still get to chose which one I want? I got a hundred off my IPad just for showing my school ID, I wonder if best buy has same deal

I don't think they are, I know they are. There is nothing on the market even remotely close. Not to mention that you don't pay $500 more for a Macbook Air than competing products - they are about the same price.
If you want a cheap computer obviously don't even look at Apple computers. If you're looking for a ~$1000 computer though then you can start to compare the competition. It is a different market.

You're willing to pay a few hundred dollars for a track pad?
When normal people look to by a computer they look at the ram, gpu, and psu, and for a laptop maybe battery life and screen. Apple overcharges for these things, unless you consider their amazing track pad technology worth the investment. Apple hardware is ridiculously overpriced, even if you like the OS. And there isn't a track pad on this planet that can compare to a 10 dollar logitech mouse.

What hundreds of dollars are you talking about? Compare say the Macbook Air to competing products and they are in the same price range.
And even if your argument were true, yes, I would absolutely pay $200-300 for the better track pad. If a laptop isn't usable on the go what's the point of it being a laptop. I already have a sweet desktop at home.

Google is your friend, I just found like 12 convertibles/laptops with ~10 hours of battery life in like 30secs. Some take an OEM extended battery, but even then most are still cheaper than apple stuff.

You went through the trouble of looking them up and you won't even list the models?
Also an extended battery would completely destroy the form factor of an ultrabook. Kinda defeats the purpose.
Let's see the ultrabooks that get 12+ hours of battery life and weigh under 3 pounds.

notice the 200 dollar buy back as well. I would certainly be more libel to trust an apple product when it's newly released. But buying older model laptops that have been thoroughly reviewed by consumers is just as effective.
If you don't think apple charges for gimmick's you're misinformed. They charge a hundred dollars per inch of extra screen.

The MBP is clearly superior. Seems pretty reasonable to me.
- better processor - better quality screen (color reproduction, viewing angles) - significantly better construction - significantly better trackpad - significantly lighter - probably better battery life
Worth $200 in my books.

200 dollar rebate makes that 400.
And if you wanted the 17 inch screen it'd be closer to 800. With the same specs. The processors are roughly equivalent. And the screen is marginally better.
And no one competent with a computer, or with anything worth while to do with a computer. Prefers a track pad to a mouse. Can't game or even browse the internet with any efficiency. I'd take a touch screen over a touch pad, but both are terrible.

And did I mention that was like 2 years ago?

Depends on what you want, a samsung series 9 would be sick imho, or an acer aspire s7,
or a refurbished macbook air (are same as new) for $929 off apple store http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook_air/13
but these are all very light weight ultraportables (the haswell chips have killer battery life too), great for college kids, travelers, and carrying around town
if you don't mind something heavy, you could probably get something with a discrete gpu to play a game with around $1k... lenovo has ummmm the y510p for like $1k w/ a 750m sli setup
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834313584
edit: reading further, i see you're in college, honestly i'd say assimilate and get the macbook air, the haswell macbook airs literally get 12 hours of battery life, you'll probably love the operating system and the trackpad etc...
just make sure you get a haswell chip regardless of what you choose, w/ school you'll probably be off the brick a lot.

My eee is a 1005 peb 5 years old 10 inch screen but I love it tweaked to max ram of 2 gigs and a 320 gig hd and I have an extra battery It's almost small enough to fit in the pockets on cargo pants. Asus discontinued the eee series 2 years ago and went to a10 and 12 inch convertible both very nice an can be had for under 500.00 damn shame in my opinion But OP can't go wrong with any asus model the 13 and 15 models are sweet and quite affordable probably can be had for around 600.00 With my extra battery it is good for about 10 hours of constant use. Remember when they rate batteries the time they give is idle or at most light use. Of course I run linux which is much easier on the battery than windows the only reason I keep it dual booted is so I can sell it easier with winblows7

Yeah the one that just fried was an HP. Only 3 years old too
I don't currently play games, but if I had the system I would love to play the new CS. I'm not getting an apple. Battery life is of little importance as it will be plugged in 99% of the time. I bring my IPad to class with keyboard for notes.

Can you explain what you need? If it's plugged in 99% of the time, why is weight important? If it's only 1% of the time you're taking it around off the brick, man up... join a gym....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834313584
take a real look at this if you can hang w/ a 6.4lb laptop... Lenovo has incredible warranty support, you're getting a 1080p screen, i7 chipset, and a dual graphics card sli 750m rig for $1k
it's pretty much a total desktop replacement..
if you want something ultraportable in your budget, you're not getting a discrete graphics card, machines @ 4.5lb or less w/ discrete graphics are around $2k....
if you want light weight in your budget, you're getting an iGPU for sure...
i'd really look at the macbook air if you want ultraportable, 3lbs, hd 5000, 1440x900 screen, ssd.... and all those valve games like counterstrike are multiplatform and support mac and linux... plus hd 5000 IGPU on a macbook air will play a valve game no sweat...
i mean i'd push you towards a samsung series 9 or acer aspire s7, but the latest haswell models w/ a considerably better iGPU are probably a bit more expensive than an air, which is already maxing your budget..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834313584
take a real look at this if you can hang w/ a 6.4lb laptop...
Thank you. People on this site are so biased against Apple product. They are generally pretty excellent. At that price point the Macbook Air is a fantastic choice unless you want to game.

The point is that apple is overpriced. He linked a laptop that shits over any apple product for anything close to that price. With the only downside being 3 extra pounds in your bag
No one is arguing if you're willing to pay them enough money apple won't deliver a great product......But they will over charge

they are, and can even handle light gaming, like a valve game, no sweat.... the witcher 2 not so much, you want the best discrete graphics you can afford if that's the type of game you want to play...
there are a ton of macbook air haswell hd 5000 gaming youtube videos, you can search almost any game and see how it will play, and that will apply to almost any i5 haswell pc equivalent w/ hd 4600, should play about the same frame rates around 1440x900p resolution or less.... has nothing to do with mac or pc, is an intel architecture thing, the haswell igpu is significantly faster than ivy bridge... bottom line is, if you want to game without a discrete graphics card like a 650m or better, an i5/i7 haswell IGPU with hd 4600 or 5000 is your best chance at accomplishing this.
i think the air is actually a pretty good bang for the buck at 3lb laptops, which are never cheap, except for atom based netbook stuff... the samsung s9 and acer aspire s7 do have nicer ips screens though, but they come with a cost.

they don't though, show me another i5 haswell 3lb laptop with an ssd and a 1440x900p screen in the same price range... this is apple's introductory laptop, they sell them like hot cakes, they don't really overcharge at all.... it's just expensive tech.
edit: there is a more considerable premium on their $2k 15" laptops though
not saying apple aren't greedy fucks, but i think with their air it's more about getting people into their ecosystem, so they are priced quite competitively for the tech

My first computer was a $400 acer aspire. It was total trash, fell apart at the seams within 6 months. 2 years later I bought a second hand 2008 MBP for $500. It has more than enough power for my needs, including 8gb RAM, Intel dual core processor, and 250gb HD.
I run it through photo and video editing, web development, and music software without any problems. The only thing I don't use it for is gaming. In the almost 5 years I've had it, I have had to only replace the hard drive, but that's because I dropped it pretty hard.
My only regret is not spending the extra $100 in the first place.

I know you hate Apple like 99% of the people on this site but they do make good products if you can see past your bias.

Love of their products is not "wide spread". Not their computers anyway. After you put together your first PC you realize how fucking ridiculous it is to pay a brand like apple a mark up for shit like that. I'd rather drag around my fucking tower than pay them, luckily there are other options.
But since no one is making modular phones or tablets they're just as good as anyone. I have a free 64 gig ipad that I am very pleased with, besides the lack of modular memory. Which is really the only reason Apple is still in business. Because let's get real their computers blow

You can do all sorts of things, edit photos, a youtube video, no fucking problem... These are excellent laptops for bloggers and college students and anyone on the go, and a rotational drive is just not ideal for even casual users doing these type of activities.
FWIW, I'm not biased at all, I own an i7-2600k @ 4.5ghz w/ EVGA GTX 670 FTW for my main desktop, a rMBP quad ivy 2.7ghz/512gb ssd/16gb ram 2880x1800 screen as my main laptop, and a 2011 "13' macbook air i5 1.7ghz w/ 256gb ssd as my travel laptop...
I'd never recommend a mac as good bang for the buck as a desktop, but fuck yes I would as an ultraportable. They compete in every way with the higher end ultraportables, the main reasons I'd point out an aspire s7 for example is the IPS 1080p screen, which the airs are still lagging behind on full hd or retina. They are more expensive though. Don't even pretend that casual users don't want a good screen, that's simply not true, they are one of the most enjoyable aspects of end user computing, along w/ SSD imho.

You've put together light, portable laptops from parts? I have a hard time believing that
I have a desktop that I built too, but sometimes you need a laptop. You're just being ridiculously condescending when I am making valid arguments.

I could if I wanted to. But it's a much more involved process that I wouldn't do personally. I have no need for a laptop. I would just buy an extremely cheap one to browse the internet and play media files anyway. So a tablet works fine.

What are you even talking about now? Most top-end laptops have well above 1080p resolution. 3200x1800 is pretty common nowadays.

Who are you going to send a file with that resolution expecting them to not have to convert it down to 1080 to actually see it?
Granted the trend is that direction. But why pay for it now? As just a regular user.....

Text is rendered properly in any resolution. It's not just about images. If you have used a high-res display like that it is less tiring on the eyes and it just looks better.

One of the main things I use my computer for is editing fine art images which are used to produce very large prints, and trust me, the screen quality of a mac is superior. I'm not just talking pixel count either, BTW.

Well I don't mean making a feature film with a macbook air lol, I mean to edit a fuckin video to put up on youtube w/ iMovie... I think many, many people without a creative bone in their body enjoy slopping together a youtube video, and an i5 laptop w/ a halfway decent screen and even a small SSD, and some decent software that's included with purchase will make that a more enjoyable experience for an end user. YMMV.... I don't give a fuck what laptop he uses, was just my POV.... take it or leave it.

If he wants power, go lenovo, as I said, that's power for money @ $1k, 6.4lbs though... If he wants light weight and reasonable specs for money, I think the air IS a good contender... 'cuz those light wieght ones all cost money, all of em.... alllll of em.....

Well, here are some points I'd like to make, he wants a haswell chipset w/ hd 5k igpu to play the latest source games w/ reasonable fps, so all old ultraportable models on sale aren't applicable. The battery should be okay on any haswell, but extended batteries are more weight, kind of negates that whole aspect... Then there are other major perks like SSD w/ the air, and wireless ac (also considerably better for playing a competitive fps game over wifi), 3lbs, thunderbolt, hd camera, multitouch trackpad, aesthetically pleasing design.... included creativity suite and iwork now a days, oh and free operating system upgrades for life since mavericks 10.9
there are a lot of perks for going with an air, but everyone can feel free to ignore them if that's their prerogative... not really my battle, i've made my case. Dude can get what he wants, but he's really failed to tell us what he wants imho... like can't weigh more than X lbs would be a nice starting place i can tell him exactly what kind of options he has in the 1k price point if it began with that.

I know you hate Apple like 99% of the people on this site but they do make good products if you can see past your bias.
Good yes but to demand the price they want? Why on earth would you buy something that costs twice as much and does the same thing? Apple operating systems are just another flavor of Nix. I can buy an x86 platform computer with the same specs as an apple and load Linux or free BSD on it and spend half as much.

OK here's more specific. Max price:1,300. I'm looking for a portable laptop that can still play games like CS:GO and Battlefield reasonably (maybe at low settings). That's pretty much it.
Would a Samsung ativ book 8 fit this bill or not?

I don't know much about laptop gpu's but here is a link for it
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-8770M.86799.0.html
It will definitely run BF4, on what settings I don't know. Heard a lot of bitching about how poorly that game was coded and not ready for release.
I don't know what CS GO requires but I'm sure you run it on close to max

this is what I bought a few weeks ago and I have no problems with it. I'm replacing the harddrive with an ssd soon though.

For gaming you're gonna want a non onboard video card like an Nvidia or ATX but you are most likely not gonna find this at best buy or some other big box store Alienware comes to mind but others are out there but be prepared to spend way more than your budget Something along these lines may work a processor in the 3.5 gig area and at least 6 gigs of ram the on board video card will probably at least be able to keep up, you might be able to pick something like this up in the 900 to 1100.00 range. I'd look at some smaller companies who deal strictly online then you get to have some input into what you order. Or if you think you're up to it build your own you can assemble a laptop in an afternoon. and have exactly what you want all you need to be able to do is read instructions and use a screwdriver.

No, not really for playing a game like battlefield 4, really what you want to do is something like a razer blade 14", these fuckers have a 765m graphics card and are 4.1lbs (1600x900 screen, 256gb ssd).... the problem is they start at $2k new..... But if you looked used on craigslist (would not buy one without some reasonable warranty left) then that might be feasible... What you want is hard to ask for, you need to go up in weight a couple lbs... CS:GO and Battlefield are totally different ballparks, and to play battlefield on a budget you are lugging 6 and a half pounds or you're paying $600 more for a more portable one it seems like

Honestly man if that's all you're looking for... you could get away with spending FAR FAR less than that. On low settings anyway.

All right, check out this shit
MSI GE Series GE40 2OC-218US Intel Core i7 4702MQ(2.20GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 128GB SSD 14.0" Notebook Windows 8
it's 4.4lbs and $1,299 w/ dedicated gtx 760m graphics
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152461
MSI GE Series GE40 2OC-008US Intel Core i7 4702MQ(2.20GHz) 8GB Memory 750GB HDD 14.0" Notebook $1,199
w/ 1600x900 NVIDIA GTX 760M @ 4.4lbs
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152409
and this thing:
Acer Aspire V5-573PG-9610 Intel Core i7 4500U(1.80GHz) 8GB Memory 1TB HDD 15.6" Touchscreen Notebook Windows 8
$929 GT 750M graphics 1366x768 and 4.85lbs
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314224
(I hate the screen res on this thing for a 15" laptop, but the lower res will help gaming on a lower spec gpu)
These are all sub 5lb laptops, I dunno about brand/models and build quality and such, but specs per weight, they are getting as close to what you want and can afford. You for sure don't want any of the aforementioned laptops before this (def not apple, had no idea you wanted games like BF, all prior points are moot). you want a gt 650m or better and under 5lbs.... those are the key specs you are looking for to even begin to have fun with battlefield and portability.
edit: there are $100 off mail in rebates for the MSI laptops, they seem like what you might want... I don't particularly trust MSI or acer on their cheaper lineups, i'd buy an extended warranty myself, but who knows really....
