Making Dye With Mushrooms
    #19270971 - 12/13/13 02:14 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So I recently came across people making dyes from mushrooms.

I'm very interested in this concept except I see lots of ammonia being used. Ive only seen like 3 species that is said to use salt water.

Does anyone know of recipes to make dye without the ammonia?

What's wrong with using ammonia?

Its naturally decomposed in the wild by bacteria and such if your thinking its environmentally unfriendly

The ammonia is a mordant that helps the dye stick to the fiber, but there are many others you can use. Alum is a good general-purpose mordant. It's often used with cream of tartar, which apparently helps it distribute more evenly on the fiber. Both ingredients are available at the grocery store and, more importantly, they smell a lot better than ammonia. You don't really need to follow a recipe; just read up on general procedures for mordanting and dyeing the type of fiber you are working with and then apply that to whichever type of dye mushroom you have.

You can also use salts of iron, tin, or copper as mordants. Each one will give you a slightly different color. Iron in particular is said to "sadden" colors; it will turn yellow into dull green, for instance.
