Eat the PF cakes!?

So I was just doing some casual reading on the FAQ's and stumbled upon this Intriguing piece of literature.
More specifically this:
"Cultures before shrooms appear: Same as above, usually. Advanced mycelia do contain psilocybin and psilocin. With the rice cake method you can grow until the mycelia are complete and then eat the cakes; this way you can trip without ever being in possession of shrooms"
Is this true haha? Could you really just grow the cakes to be fully colonized then ingest to visit the stars?

If it is having that mycelium would be just as illegal as having shrooms, maybe even more so.

cakes are 2/3 verm and 1/3 flour, so unless you have a knack for eating dirt(some kids do) then I wouldn't recommend

i dont believe the mycelium contains psilocybin... could be totally wrong though. wouldnt be the first time.
IF the mycelium does contain amounts of psilocybin and psilocin... its probably REALLY scarce.
They could quite possibly be talking about truffles/sclerotia. I believe that is to be considered an "advanced mycelia network"

I would not recommend eating that at all. Vermiculite would Tare you up. Not appealing

Well sir, the plastic jars technique much discussed lately can use cakes of 100% brown rice. If not for the unknown nature of eating whatever bacteria has been in the water for however long, you could merrily eat these all day long. I expect dose would be severely unpredictable. I do recall reading that mycelia do contain the psychoactives just the same as caps and stems, but no way to know the myc/sub ratio of the cake to make a comparison.

Most of what I have read concerning this practice is that its a pretty gross and disgusting way to recycle a cake. You may feel a threshold dose, but its probably not worth the long term repercussions.

I've made tea from just plain substrate (a mix of coir, verm and the rye used as spawn) on a number of occasions and tripped. So the myc definitely does contain actives. In addition, I've frequently seen non-fruit-body myc bruise when handled roughly so it must have psilocybin in it in some quantities.
The problem is that the amount of sub you need for a trip is quite large. A cup full of substrate wasn't enough for more than threshold/possible placebo effects. Presumably this is because myc doesn't contain as much alkaloids as the fruit. Which just means lots of water to cover all that sub when making the tea and hence lots to drink. I really don't like the taste of shroom tea so this is a drawback for me.
I really would NOT consider eating a cake. I once didn't strain the tea properly and nearly ended up vomiting when I drank verm and coir. This was probably just a psychological reaction to getting solids in my mouth when I expected only liquid and the knowledge that these solids were coir and verm.
So basically not worth the effort imo. Just eat the shrooms themselves and be done with it.

Fuck its just easier to grow shrooms and eat those. Spent subs go into the garden or trash depending on the time of year.

Im sure it would work, and if you're all NO WASTE, go for it.
More trouble than its worth? Thats something you would have to ask yourself.

For the love of gawd don't eat them. Crumple them up and case them in the back yard and let them grow outside.

Colonizing and even fully colonized mycelium will have small amounts of psilocin, but little to no psilocybin, which is produced by tertiary mycelium.
It's probably best not to trip on it though-you'll freak out when you shit your pants from food poisoning(bacteria) and it glitters. Buzz kill. RR

If anyone is keen on eating mycelium, I'd think grain spawn would be safer than cakes.
