Have an idea

I think I'm going to start putting some substrate bags into my dishwasher... The temps don't exceed 165F and I believe it would be great to properly pasteurize and cut out the time of washing jars etc...
Discuss the possibility.

Umm.....it would take several cycles if it even worked. Also a 16qt pc or larger should accomodate the diameter of a 5 gal bucket for most models. Using a hot water bath just like using jars, one can easily hydrate 20qts of coir in the bucket with hot tap water while your pot is heating. If you preheat your pot, you can go from hydration to pasteurization in 30 mins or less.

Several cycles? No it would not, it would take one cycle, 45 minutes. How it would it not work? What factors are missing? Please actually use some science instead of just wasting your energy giving out crap...
Anyway I plan on doing this tomorrow..

it wouldn't pasteurize it... maybe the outside layer but not the inside.. it takes my pc 25 min to get the core to reach 130f..

How are you going to get your core temp to 140F for 30-60 min during a 45 min cycle?
Check it with a probe after the cycle.

The right way of pasteurizing is to get the core to maintain a constant temp for the right amount of time. Dishwasher will only get the outside warm. Pretty much what these guys are tellin ya above this post.

actually it might be possible, they done something like this on mythbusters.
there was a story going round that you could cook a meal using a dishwasher.
So they put probes into the machine, replaced the front with perspex to see what was going on and ran it through varies cycles to see what temperatures they got.
what they found that was given enough time that they could indeed cook a lasagne in a dishwasher but it took quite a long time.
Might have been somewhere along 4 hours to cook a small lasagne dish.

There is a famous chef that cooked a turkey this way but his name eludes me. Anywho if your water is hot enough it will take you several cycles to sufficiently heat the core.
I shall waste no more energy giving out crap to you. For future reference, if you ask a question on the forums, especially a noob one, expect to get different points of view from your own.
That is all, away with you.

You can cook things in the dishwasher, that's not just a story.
Pasteurizing a substrate though, that's different than a jar of asparagus.
Hell, even in the oven at 350F a turkey takes hours to reach 165 internally
