few things in my way..what career would you guys say i should look into?
    #19274671 - 12/14/13 01:02 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

okay so I'm 23 and I have no real work experience, just cash work for Family. I also suffer from 2 to 3 Seizures per month, and have no car or way to drive. I might be able to dive a year or two from now. This plus my arrest reccord of about 2 marijuana poss convitions, a pending ouid, and a controlled substance/attempt to distribute charge that will result in a probably two years probo after some jail time, is making it impossible to find any work the past two years of looking and trying well over 100 places.

I also don't have the cash for education. my family would probably Help with that for a little while, as long as its not too pricey.

when I was 18 and 19 I was in a pharmacology program, but I had to leave because of my Drug charges.

I'm very interested in things like medicine , but I don't think with mY charges thats would be an option.

Im really interested in journalism and traveling, as well as extended volunteer work, but idk if i would be able to do that stuff well enough to make a living.
Working with some sort of gentics to do with growing food or chemistry to make safer chemicals would be cool too, but money and time are in my way for going into that field.

I also love to cook, but wouldnt be able to handle the stress of being a restaurant chef and standing in a 100 degree kitchen all day, only making good money if youre at the top of the chef totem poll.

Im not too good with computers. I could put one together but software i fail at.

I do however have an affinity for sales, as well as growing things in dirt, which could tie into the gentics thing i mentioned earlier.

Any ideas for maybe a program thats like 8 months or a year or two? Im just really hoping my life doesnt end up being buss ride to minium wage job the rest of my life

Thanks for any advice you may be able to give

No matter what career path you pursue (and you should pursue the one you have a true love for), the problem you will face is an inherent lack of trust by the employer.  This will stem from your criminal history.

My only advice is to try and get the absolute lowliest job in XYZ industry/career you pursue, and:
-have perfect attendance
-never say "i can't/wont do that"
-finish everything ahead of schedule
-take shit from your boss with a smile

and over time, their inhibitions that stemmed from your past will be overridden by their actual experiences with you - and your "barrier" will have been broken.

good luck

I think drug charges drop off after 7 years or so right? im not too sure, but dont think that should be much of a deterrent for an employer should you be applying for a career gig several years from now.

for the meantime, if you are a good salesman, that will trump any bullshit on your record to an employer. If you can handle a bit of a high pressure sales environment maybe try working a sales lot somewhere, or cellphone store? What i would also recommend is trying to network with the people you know to get hooked up somewhere. if you have a friend who works somewhere and maybe they could help you get a foot in the door. just make sure you keep your friends employment in good standing by being a good worker.

as for training, if you wanted to go school the only thing i can recommend in good conscience is a hard science degree, such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, etc... if you are looking for career longevity anything practical in computer software/engineering will last you a lifetime.

Um..you may have considered it before but I think growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms and selling them would really suit you lol.

You grow mushrooms that are either delicious or have medicinal properties; both of which can be sold to farmers markets, food distributors and health stores etc.

Maybe you could spend 8 month studying mushrooms, reading about it and experimenting

Lol have a look into it

What would make me happiest would be posting up in some small indian or chinese village, with enough land to grow food for myself and family, and maybe a fishing pole to catch dinner once in a while lol. Find me a cute hindu indian girl thats alright with a simple life, have 2 or 3 babies. I would be in absolute bliss till the day i died lmao.

Help around the village and get help in return. As simple a life as possible.

But thats a total pipe dream and completely unrealistic

Maybe something that would allow me to find employment abroad, pref india, but i doubt i have the mental capacity to compete in that job market.

The more and more i think about it, the more i fear ill end up stuck with a 25 or 30k a year miserable job(if even that much), and never be able to gtfo of this country, or live any semblance of a simple life not governed by getting up every morning to drive to my mundane job then come home to struggle with bills and not be able to find a decent, classy female that is oke with my shit income and probably living near the city. I hate all this, i want to walk outside my home and see lush green and pretty landscape/countryside, not traffic filled roads lined with factory buildings and stores..

Bleh

Wow you are dreaming.  Little quaint village in India or China?  Those folks are freaking everywhere the rivers are where they take baths and wash clothes along with using them as open sewers.  And if you hit a cow they beat you 20x with a whip.

And this bit with better genetics and food, we need hella less genetic modification of food, and back to Heirloom varieties.  Course now barely anything is growing outdoors, the spray of heavy metals has the plants at least where I live looking quite bummed.  But I digress.

I think you should work fast food for minimum 6 months.  Anything after that will look good to you.

^ what he said.

There are infinite options for someone with a record. Trades and oil field amongst the top of the list. I have never once been asked about a criminal history, although have had to submit driving abstracts.

Get out into the world, work some shitty jobs, and meet people outside of your normal day-to-day existence who will offer insight into what you want or do not want from life. DO NOT go to school until you become focused on a career path. In my situation, focus came after working shitty jobs and feeling exploited, and having low self esteem because of it.

Look at it this way: Some people are meant to make up the bottom tier jobs of society, and others are not. You need to make up where you fit in. I'll tell you right now that fantasizing about escaping society and living off the land is detrimental to your current development. It is RIGHT NOW that you need to focus on, not the future. You will never "escape" without a lifetime of hardwork first.

Getting your drivers license and a vehicle should be first priority.

Focus on your CURRENT REALITY first, then worry about the future later.

OK here's the deal.  I bought a riverfront property for cash, but now am faced with removing buckets of shit and piles of shit and just plain dealing with shit.  Great it's a great riverfront property, but it's a fucking mountain of shit.  And I'm fucking getting too old for this shit.  But somehow the shit is worth it, as long as you don't give too much of a shit on the way to "the top".  The higher my status the more shit I have to clean up.  I get it.

OP have you considered joining the military?

Honestly in hindsight enlisting when i was 18 would have made my life so much better. I wouldn't have gotten into drugs and be struggling with a heavy opiate addiction for the past 2 years, and wouldnt have been through all this legal shit.

Im probably going to end up with an extended jail stay due to a snobby neighbor not liking my medical marijuana, and telling thhe police there was a gas leak with children in my place. No children or gas leak anywhere in my building.

Anyway bunch of undercover cops bust my door down and arrested me for felony charges of poss of a controlled substance with a manufacture/distribution charge as well, all over 3 grams of bho, and a scale. If they swab that scale and get the opiate residue, im facing prison not jail.

Evidently bho is illegal even with my med card.

It really seems like im doomed to minimum wage and a 1 bedroom apartment my entire life. I know the traveling and getting away is a total pipe dream, doubly so with this new severe legal stuff ive brought upon myself

Seems as though im destined to be the lower end of society...someone has to be on the bottom for people to be on top i suppose.

You sell yourself short. Get a trade at the very least.

Work in a factory for a few months, then as the other peopel say you appreciate anything else.

For me I have a degree, and a masters degree, and am practically the only person in my field without a PhD. My advice, liek the other posters, is to get a trade. Trades make a bit less than me, but didn't spend years studying - they also don't have as much stress, or need to be as much on top of things (or take their work home!)

Specialist builder, gas fitter, plumber, electrician, something of that sort.

i suggest finding a well paid apprenticeship such as an electrician, mechanic or welding. however this depends on where you are living so you might have to relocate. just my 2 cents
