Trying to figure out if mold or bruising on casing
    #19273991 - 12/14/13 10:08 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Brand new to the world of mycology and to this site. I have been using it to get amazing tips to start up but I am here now because I need help in identifying my problem.  I use the Martha Stewart set up, two casings of rye with verm.  I got the wrong humidifier and is an ultrasonic so I have had to tweak a lot getting a constant humidity level with temp. I'm combining it with perlite sitting on top of two containers, the top container holding water with a fish tank heater to give some heat because it's winter time up north.  It's been 4 days of fruiting, everything was looking healthy, I've been monitoring the environment and figured out a level adjustment to retain 90% humidity and a temp between 72-77 by the aid of a heater in the closet pointing towards a computer fan installed just below the casing for FAE which has helped greatly in allowing evaporation from the ultrasonic and I can run it constantly at the lowest setting.  So that's for the set up and where I'm at with that, now this issue.....

Since the addition of FAE, I was experimenting with the ultrasonic and trying to figure out how I could keep this thing running.  The unit I have does not work on a timer because once the unit turns off, it doesn't kick back on without turning it on manually.  So I had a pretty good level of humidity at one point but decided to leave it off over night to allow for some evaporation because the casings where coated with moisture.  Overnight though, the temperature rose to 77 when I checked in the morning but the humidity dropped to 54%!  I noticed a bit of bluish almost green coloration on the most developed part of the first tray.  Its only on small tops of the mycelium and not over the casing itaelf.  I am panicking because I can't tell if this is bruising, part of the first stage of pinning, or if this is my worse nightmare...CONTAMINATION.  I have read that bruising can occur on mycelium if humidity drops too low.  I have been pretty good with sterilizing everything but I goofed yesterday when I forgot to wipe down the tubes used for the humidifier.  I also had to tubes running from the top from a fish tank pump but decided to take them down because the fan was good enough.  So I'm hoping someone has seen this and could tell me what this is.

Pinning has begun, there is maybe 1% on each tray where I can actually see a tiny cluster of pins beginning.  I sprayed down the casing this morning and left the humidifier, fan, and the heater going all morning and so far it's at a steady 92% H with a constant temp of 72 for the past few hours.  The heater by the way kicks on only when temp drops soot doesn't run constantly.  Also, the perlite seems to be getting a little yellow in one spot, is that mold or just perlite? Can mold grow on perlite? The fan is blowing directly over the perlite under the casings with the heater inline with the computer fan to pull fresh warm air into the tent.  PLEASE HELP! Thanks everyone! My solution right now is to give another day and see if it spreads

Your problem is lack of a steady Rh. That drop in Rh event you described doesn't help either.

At this stage, the fans performing FAE should only be used for 15 mins, timed 3 or 4 times a day. Another issue, I really don't know if that ultrasonic unit should be enough for that volume. Either you're mishandling the unit setup or it's not powerful enough for your FC. But anyway, if you can't get high Rh levels I understand the use of perlite but I still question how you handle air exchanges. Less air exchanges means higher Rh.

Stop the fans and try understanding how the ultrasonic unit works. Keep a steady Rh and let the fans work 3 or 4 times per day.

Regarding the possibility of contamination. It's possible but IMHO I think you're good. Sometimes, mycellium reacts to lower Rh periods by turning to a yellowish color or even bruising.

Thank you my friend! I am holding 99-90% RH/72-77 temp with the computer fan running the whole time. So far it's a decent balance.  It was a struggle trying to get that ratio just right. As far as the coloring, it hasn't gotten worse, I am thinking its just bruising too

It's important not to saturate the substrate with excess droplets from the ultrasonic.
