Cakes and all the space they take... ???
    #19269718 - 12/13/13 08:08 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am a total newb so I know cakes in sgfc can't be a bad idea. But it occured to me just how much space I lose with them. My SGFC can hold 8 cakes (the flat 1/2 pints or tall pints), but I have 24 flat 1/2 pint jars. If I make a monotub instead, I can put 21 cakes side by side in it. If I double stack the cakes I can fit 16 in an sgfc. I have access to bulk subs and casings such as hpoo, coir, woodchips, peatmoss, and vermiculite.

Does it make sense to talk about the possibilities or should just one stick to the basics if not for moving on to something else like grains for instance?

I'd like to know what you think about this from the perspective of someone who will start with cakes before trying grains...

Example: is it easy to double stack in sgfc (cakes are about 2" high individually)

Example: can you just lay all the cakes side by side in a monotub and fill the gaps with bulk substrate? But is it worth the risks, how much riskier would this be compared to just cakes in a sgfc?

Thanks

i usually stack my cakes. put a nice layer of verm in between the two cakes and you should be set. cakes arent the most efficient way to grow, but they defiantly will give you bang for your buck. if your just learning they are a great way to start~!

Brf casings seem easy enough for beginners, if you have an extra cake try a 50/50 casing.. takes up more space, but i get way more per flush off one-cake casings than i do from 6 regular fruited cakes

You could make something like this using your cakes as spawn

I'm not a big fan of using cakes as spawn, but you can crumble and spawn your cakes put them in a tub ( like a shoebox size 6q one) and then put that whole tub into your SGFC

Thanks for the info to all of you... They were all great suggestions so I had to sleep on it to figure out the choice I'd make. For now, I'll stick to cakes in sgfc, but I will try double stacking. Heck I might even try tripple stacking.

Was thinking I'd seperate each cake with enough moist verm that they won't stick together, so that they can be un-stacked between flushes for dunking. And to make sure they are stable enough I thought I should try sticking them with a skewer like this:

Thanks again for helping me work this out peeps!

I have not tried this yet but this is what I'm going to experiment doing. I'm going to lay a small layer of bulk substrate on the bottom lay the cakes sided by side, fill in the gaps and then a small layer of bulk on top

If you stack cakes I would put foil between the layers not just wet verm. The bottom cakes get soggy if not seperated by something waterproof

Stacking cakes rarely leads to twice the harvest weight because surface area is reduced. Furthermore, smaller substrates have a higher B.E. than larger ones. The answer if you need more room is a larger terrarium or multiple smaller ones.

Once you move to bulk substrates, cakes make a nice spawn until you get a pressure cooker to enable grain prep in larger jars.

I do have a PC and it's making me think... I could do grains in trays in sgfc. I suddently realized I'd be skipping the LC so this sounds interesting to me even more.

However, when I choose my grain and bulk sub, should that B.E. come into play since I'm still using an sgfc?

Btw I don't know what B.E. means :-S

Thanks

biological efficiency and it's more about the sub then the fruiting chamber, cakes have a very high BE  compared to alot of other methods

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

And once you get into bulk moisture content seems to be pretty important factor with regards to BE, Damn all the variables lol.

Yeah dam all the variables lol. It is a different game than cakes that's for sure.
Well we'll see how it goes... My plans change all the time. I got fed up looking for cheap brown rice, and I just didn't see an LC as needed anymore. So here goes the rye seeds and the agar to grain transfers... Will be using trays in sgfc... But who knows, I change my mind all the time ;-)

I'll tell ya what and I don't know why but people on this site really seem to push them cakes for us newer guys. And in all honesty I put just as much time in effort into a pf style cake, as I do for a tray of bulk. I only did one cake one time, and quickly realized it was not the way to go. I actually enjoy taking raw materials and setting my own path. Lots of haters on here everyone always trying to shoot ya down, but it's definitely been a fun learning journey, now if I could only have consistency I'd feel blessed.
