Inoculating Christmas trees?
    #19258260 - 12/10/13 11:47 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Has anyone ever inoculated Christmas trees with conifer loving plug or sawdust spawn?

I have some Laetiporus Conifericola (Chicken of the Woods) dowels if anyone wants to give it a try.

Interesting concept, would be fun to see mushrooms growing on your christmas tree haha

Well christmas trees are usually douglas fir or noble firs so anything that grows on them should be okay.

Or just do a search to see if your chicken of the woods grows on firs.
Good luck!

The Chicken of the Woods strain I have prefers conifers, especially Douglas Fir and Spruce.

I figure it's a great urban waste stream that can be converted into food.

They probably get cut about 5 or 6 weeks before people start discarding them after Xmas. The moisture content will be high and the fungicidal compounds in the tree should be abated by then.

I actually seen a kit for this somewhere the other day so it must work or someone will have some very unjolly customers this Christmas.

I've really really wanted to try chicken of the woods after seeing a video of it. I'd try anything at least once or a few times. I am afraid though I am so totally new to doing this, I have no skill yet. I haven't even been able to grow oysters yet, though I have grey and golden inoculated as we speak, and it looks good so far. After christmas seems like a great time to pick up a bunch of christmas trees trees though for sure. might help save some landfills a bit.

Ya it's always great to divert waste streams. Turning them into healthy, nutritious food is a double bonus.
