Lion's Mane questions - Please!!
    #19258589 - 12/11/13 02:29 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am looking for a simple tek to follow for these.

Will lion's mane fruit right out of the top of a grain jar prior to spawning? It seems like it has been indicated, but there's very little info on this intriguing edible. Would probably do this for the first flush before spawning to something else. I've always wanted to try these, but I've never seen the locally.

I tried straw once, but it contam'd. I do not have good access to sawdust or woodchips, but I have plenty of shredded paper and cardboard as well as some espresso grinds.

I know basically what to do with the cardboard, but I can use some advice so I have a set plant to follow, knowing what to look out for to avoid failure and boost success. I have several ideas, but it's hard to decide what would be best.

Plan 1: I would pasteurize cardboard and the espresso separately. Then I would make a "lasagna" with the coffee and grain. I suppose I could do this in a basket instead of a bag so it colonizes quicker, no? Can I put the basket in a tub of perlite with the lid off?

Plan 2: I would love to make a bag of pasteurized shredded paper, coffee and grain spawn, but I am concerned about it being too soggy and stunting the growth thus allowing the grain to contam first. Would adding verm be a good idea? If so, how do you determine how much?

I tested this on a small jar of sterilized aspen bedding. I know it tends to be whispier growth on that, but it seems that it is taking very long, and I would not be confident about working with it out of the sterile jar. One thing I realized is that I soaked the wood to field capacity. But I am not sure if that is too much moisture for wood. Perhaps the extra moisture is responsible for the slow growth.

I realize my post is asking a lot of different things, but anything you can answer or any guidance you can share about working with these materials would be great.

If you've lost to contamination once already, I'd skip the whole coffee idea for sure.

For a simple, more likely to succeed tek use Lipa's fuel pellet tek.

You should be able to find fuel pellets where you are.  Put pellets in bag, pour in boiling water, leave overnight.  In morning, mix in a quart of spawn.  Can't get simpler than that.

One trick with lion's mane is not getting it too wet.  Start with less water than the tek says, and if you have dry pellets after a couple hours, then add more.  I use 6 cups pellets to 5.5 cups boiling water.  Throw in a little gypsum if you have it.

When it's all colonized (or it starts pinning), fold the bag down tight and cut 2 or 3 holes for the fruit to grow out.

Edit: and don't fruit them off the grain and then use that for spawning.  If you want to try fruiting off grain, do that, but I wouldn't use it for spawn after that, use fresh spawn.

He's got it right front to back.
Coffee has been nothing but trouble for me every time I've tried using it.

If you are having trouble locating wood pellets you might need to find a local fireplace/woodstove shop.

Good idea, or a feed store if they have those?  Maybe away from the city...  You might have to do some searching, but I would think they'd have them somewhere there, it's not like you're in Florida.  Here they carry them at Home Depot and Lowe's.

Now is the time of year to get the pellets at Lowes by me, since they are typically winter seasonal and are usually $4.00 for a 40lb bag.  I grew Lions Manes successfully following Lipas Tek above.  The myc does look different than other strains I've grown and was scratching my head alot during colonization wondering if things were right.  Personally, I didnt care for the texture or taste, but they were awesome to watch grow.

I think grain spawn alone would be to nutritious to fruit well, but I've grown lion's mane on pasteurized cardboard with no supplementation. The fruits were on the smaller side, but still a tasty success!

I've already got the grain ready to go, so there's no backing out of that. I am aware of the pellet thing and I can get them, but I wanted to use paper for recycling as well.

Would cardboard alone colonize before the grain rotted, or is there something else to supplement with besides coffee? I've done oysters on paper with coffee. They were on old books though, not cardboard. looking to use up the cardboard and shredded paper I have in abundance.

Lions Mane really does not need any additional supplements, all of my cultures start fruiting way before they fully colonize... picshttp://

I've found that it produces well on straight wood but second and third flushes are better with some bran.  Usually use 15-20%

It's sounding like it does not require much in the way of nutrients. So am I correct that grain would be enough to fruit them with?

If I open the top of the jar, would that be good for a first flush before trying something else?

If I at least get something I will be less bothered if I experiment and lose it afterwards.

It'll fruit, for sure.  How well it will do I don't know, never tried it that way, post results if you do!

Well, fruiting out of the top of the jar DID NOT work. It looked like some fruits wanted to form, but not enough was exposed to the air. I can probably pull it out still and use it to inoculate more cardboard.

But here is the second experiment. This is just 1/2 pint of wbs spawn. I made a "lasagna" of wbs and pasteurized cardboard. I did not supplement at all.  If you use a fork, you can really spread out the wbs well. I pulled the layers apart, so there's at least 2 layers of seed per piece of cardboard. There's came a lot of layers out of such a small jar. I did everything right into a gallon zip lock so I would not lose anything to spillage. After the first day, I cut a number of slits in the plastic, which proved to be vital. The block was placed on a bed of perlite (in a pot strainer) which was inside a tub with the lid off.  This all formed in about 2 weeks or less. It was very quick. I only sprayed it down over the plastic once or twice. Most of it was neglected.

I am not sure how long to keep letting it go. I don;t want these mushrooms to over-develop. They look good enough to pick now. But I know they get bigger, and there's plenty of life left in the block. I was thinking of pulling the plastic off now and trying to keep more on top of spraying.

i'd reckon you can keep letting it grow until it doesn't for a few days. it took mine at least a week in the kitchen I think...  Way to go!  :dancer:

Well it began fruiting before the weekend. I was away, and it got much bigger. I am not sure it grew much since yesterday though.

There seems to be a lot of others forming. This one is hardly enough for a meal, but certainly a good taste. Maybe I'll cut it this weekend and let the others fruit together.
