Monotub Partial Colonize Issue (pics)
    #19271824 - 12/13/13 05:45 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Greetings all! Hope all is well always.

Having an issue with colonization here, still a beginner.

1.)

This is the bottom of the tub, won't seem to colonize in those 3 areas, whereas everything else appears done, or well over as the next pic suggests.

2.)

This is the top. Knots seem to be forming? Not sure.. No sign of obvious contaminants to me. No funky smells.

3.)

Close-up of the bottom. I noticed some yellow pigmentation, but I'm guessing it is mycelial waste?

Overall, not sure what to do. There does seem to be a layer of water accumulated on the bottom of the bin. Perhaps those areas can't grow from being water logged? Perhaps I should put it into fruiting before a contam has a chance to grow, or does one seem apparent? No weird smells, just not sure where to go from here.

Thanks!

-Auechre

condensation has run down the side throwing off your moisture content and maybe compacted your sub a bit and also may have caused you a bacterial contam, use a liner the next time.
what ratios did you use

as for the colonization you probably didn't mix your spawn well enough.  next time use a liner...

Used 4 qts spawn and 7 substrate.

Would a liner have prevented this scenario? I read before that liners are really just important if you don't want side-pinning.

Still looking for a suggestion whether I should put them into fruiting or not

i find with a liner the water from the condesation build up goes behind/underneathe the liner. when i didn't use one i ended up in your situation more then once, the blobs on your surface could be from a bacterial problem-but i also see some purple in the middle which i hope is just your camera, how does it smell? i would give it time and once put into fruiting i would have the top holes extremely loose to blast that sub with fresh air

It smells normal, nothing unnatural about it. Just not finishing those 3 spots for a week now. Yes, the purple was shading from camera.

I'm under the impression that the coir got compacted to the point it won't colonize in those spots, however, the mycelium thinks it's 100% and wants to fruit anyway. Is that possible? If I'm not mistaken, I think the knotting like this occurs when fruiting is overdue.

Ah, my mistake. Wonder what they are then.

Probably hitting the 3rd week right now.

Tested letting the bin colonize in the light. Not sure if that makes any difference. In past success the tubs were covered by a black trash bag.

by the metabolites underneathe and the blobs on top i'm gonna say a bacterial contam, not the end of the world though, you can try to fruit it but i would give it as much fae as possible

Awesome, perhaps I'll try fruiting soon just for kicks. Really, I just want to learn. I feel bad whenever I let them down so... Idk. I like to know what's going on and why. Yeah, it'd be cool if some fruited, but if the blobs were indicative of contams, wouldn't it be bad to ingest any normal fruiting bodies? As far as health concerns.

Just went to Home Depot and got liner for the next one ^__^

no there fine to eat, they don't absorb contams
