help me save my seedling please!
    #19237190 - 12/06/13 03:55 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I got this E novo in the mail yesterday and transplanted it into black gold african violet mix potting soil. im not sure that its a good choice of soil but its what i had and has lots of perlite. The roots were wrapped in moist newspaper which i kept on and planted. (maybe this is where i went wrong? the root system was small i didnt want to damage it and thought it would grow through) I lightly watered with spray bottle of distilled water when transplanting then covered top with layer of dry soil.

Last night and today it snowed. it dropped to a low of 18 degrees even! Im pretty sure this is whats effecting the plant. I have the plant in a heated house about 3 feet back from a sliding glass door for light. All my other plants there seem to be doing fine but the E novo all the leaves on the bottom of the plant are starting to curl today (day 2).

It also spend 3 days in the mail which could have effected it negatively.
Maybe the dryness from being in a heated house? Do i need to give it humidity?

So heres some pictures

What can i do to save it from the cold? or what else might be causing the leaf curling? Could really use some advice from somebody more experienced. I dont want to lose my seedling!

As far as lighting for indoors all i got is two 2 foot 18 watt cfl tubes which im not sure put out enough light for plants..

Well hopefully it pulls through its got until tuesday before the temps are back to normal according to the weather report which is constantly changing :frown:

For now lll just pull the table a foot or two further back from the glass and hope they get enough light.

Dig them up and carefully remove the newspaper, then replant, all the while making sure you do not damage the roots. The newspaper holds no nutrients for the plants to grow on, so they'd have to use up any nutrients stored in their leaves for the roots to penetrate the paper.

I agree with koraks,
I don't think the newspaper is helping the little seedling you may want to try placing a plastic bag on top to raise humidity if it is too low. good luck keep us updated! also make sure you are not over watering the soil should be dry between waterings

i took the newspaper off very gently last night. I think i managed to do it without causing any damage.

So far the leaves are still curly, but alive. more curly than last time. the top leaves are still not curly except for the tips of the leaves. Only 2 more nights of freezing temps.

They are pretty sensitive to the cold, but they also cannot deal with the dry air from a heater. Try to keep them in temps of above 65 F even if it means moving them back from a window. They really don't need that much light especially in the winter. Be careful of overwatering and fungus gnats too.

In the first days, cold will be more damaging than insufficient light. So move them to a warm spot and heed naum's advice: don't overwater them! Moist is good, wet is bad.

The freezing temps have mostly let up now. The seedling is still not looking very happy, if anything its looking a bit worse than before. But the fact that it hasnt died after 5 days is encouraging.

So heres the symptoms if anybody can help me diagnose the problem

bottom 5 leaves shriveled, still green
top leaves slightly shriveled at tips
very top leave slight yellowing at the tip

As far as watering, I misted it with original transplant and gave it one more thorough watering the day after removing the newspaper. I havnt watered it since.

If you can recognize the problem and advise me as to what is causing it, would be appreciated.

soil looks a little dry I think it needs more humidity too

you want to water it every time it drys out don't over water it don't under water it sometimes you can kill your plants with too much love! try placing it in some type of clear plastic bag make sure the leaves don't touch the walls. you could try placing a heating pad underneath it if it's getting too cold.

lovely cacti you have there as well...

That soil looks bone dry. Stick a finger into it down to your second knuckle. If it's dry then give a good watering to moisten the entire medium. Those leaves are drying out either through lack of water or being dried by warm, dry air, ie: A heater.  I just think it was a little bit of transplant shock, it being still alive is good and you now just need to encourage it along with the right environment and watering.

Thank you both alot for the advice.

Ill check tommorow morning the moisture level to see if it needs a watering. The air was definately dry in the house the last week due to the heater running alot because it was completely freezing outside. If i do put a bag on it for humidity, how long should i leave it before i start to ween it off of the humidity?

Also the leaves were already curling last time i watered it and there wasnt an improvement so i dont think thats whats causing the problem, but a combination of stress from being in the mail, the transplant, the cold, and the humidity probably all chipped in on it.

Yeah heaters really suck the humidity out of the air! Just be careful with the bag make sure no leaves are touching, it will kill them. I would leave the bag on for a week or 2 see how its doing always make sure to air the bag out (take it off) for a min or two every day or so. Just make sure your plant is getting fresh air but humid! If it appears to be recovering you can start weening it off the bag by poking holes in it over a period of time then removing.

You guys were right it was bone dry to the second knuckle. I thoroughly watered it and threw a kettle corn style bag over it.

So does the bag need holes so it can breath a little bit or is removing the bag for a minute or two per day enough?

I would punch a few holes in it, Even with a bunch of holes the humidity will be higher and remember if your humidity is too high you can run into problems like mold so be careful and keep an eye on it! good luck keep us updated!

Glad to hear it's doing better. Don't let it get too comfortable in its humidity tent either. Better to let it acclimate to your conditions over time. It may complain about the lack of humidity but will get used to it as it gets older. Humidity tents can cause problems of their own.

The bottom leaves rehydrated just to fall off for whatever reason :frown:

So now its lost the 4 bottom leaves that were shriveled and has only the top 4 left.
