Bartending

Anyone been or currently working as a bartender?
I'm sitting in on a class next Tuesday and I'm 90% sure I'm going to enroll and become a bartender. I'm not sure even what city I'm going to be in in a few months, and part of me thinks I should during my 1 year spiritual quest thing I'm doing spend a couple months in several places around the country with a variety of people.
There are bars everywhere so this seems like a no-brainer, plus it seems like good money.
The school I'm looking at costs $900 after $100 off for donating a needed item to the ASPCA, but they have AMAZING job placement assistance and 70 affiliated schools all over the country, so if you're a graduate in good standing you can use the job placement services of any of the other schools in any town that has one.
I'm thinking this is a smart move
I bet it'd be fun as fuck too since I crave people so much.

Haha I'm gay but maybe with enough drinks in me... lol. I take it it was a pretty dec gig then?
How much is realistic to expect hourly, average wise (over a few weeks, since I realize day shifts probs pay less than night shifts).
What kind of venue did you work in?

We have a school like that here, they also teach card games if you wanna work at the casino.
Ive thought about becoming a bartender just for the fact I love making random cocktails, trying to figure out what tastes good and what doesn't. My boyfriend actually brought it up and said he thought id enjoy it. I would, but I honestly would want to work somewhere classy, not a damn nightclub with loud ass music or a fucking Applebees.

I don't think it's particularly easy to just "become a bartender". From what I've heard those "schools" are a total joke.
To become a bartender you usually need to start as a barback and work your way up. It often takes a few years before you can get up to bartending positions, they are pretty coveted because of the possibility for massive tips.

I'm aware. Those schools just teach you the basics for what you'd need to know to pass the bar exam. There's plenty of shitty ass bartender's.
You ever watched that show Bar Rescue on Spike? I love that show, haha.

A ducks walks into a bar and asks, “Got any grapes?”
The bartender, confused, tells the ducks that no, his bar doesn’t serve grapes. The duck thanks him and leaves.duck
The next day, the duck returns and says, “Got any grapes?”
Again, the bartender tells him that, no, the bar does not serve grapes, has never served grapes, and, furthermore, will never serve grapes. The duck, a little ruffled, thanks him and leaves.
The next day, the duck returns, but before he can say anything, the bartender begins to yell: ”Listen, duck! This is a bar! We do not serve grapes! If you ever ask for grapes again, I will nail your stupid duck beak to the bar!”
The duck is silent for a moment, and then asks, ”Got any nails?”
Confused, the bartender says no.
”Good!” says the duck. ”Got any grapes?”

Well, there were enough hot dudes working there, too. Gay guys, straight guys, hot chicks... almost everybody was DTF, too.
The joint I worked in was pretty cool. There was a fine dining restaurant on the first floor, a bar grub restaurant on the second, pool tables on the second, fourth and half of the third floors, and a stand up comedy venue on the other half of the third floor.
The best job was service bartender for the laugh club. All I would do was make drinks for the waitresses, and then kick back and listen to the stand-up show. It was a mad rush to make drinks before the show started, and then it cooled down for the rest of the show.
I think the hourly rate was about CAD 5.85, which at the time was about two or three dollars less than minimum wage. The tip outs were usually pretty good, though. The whole building pooled tips, and then at the end of the evening we all sat down and divided it up by hours worked that day. (We also got shitfaced at the same time, lol). Most nights I walked out of there with about $100 in tips. More than a few times we were making more than $20/hour in tips, which was pretty good at the time.
I went to bartending school too, but that's not how I landed the gig. I was headhunted from a local Starbucks, lol. The bartending school helped me get the Starbucks job, though. The school I went to was quite a bit less expensive than the one you're looking at, though. Mind you, that was some time ago.
It was a pretty fun job, and the pay was good for me at the time, but I could tell that after a few years there I would have been burnt right out. Work, beer and blow, sleep, do it again. Fun Times

Seeing as how you've already got some customer service experience, you should just hit up some bars with resumes. There is usually a pretty high staff turnover in most bars, and they're usually looking for good staff almost constantly. Especially around Chrismas (party) season.
Most of the drinks you make as a bartender are simple, like rum and coke, gin and tonic, and draught beer pints. I don't think I used much of the stuff I learned in bartending school on the job. Being able to hustle without complaint is probably the most important part of the job. It helps if you're at least semi-attractive, too.

A class to be a bartender? Is that a law or rule in your state in order to become one? I've bartendered in the past.
Its great money but say good bye to your weekend and some of your social time (besides at work). You'll work Halloween, New Years and St. Patricks day FOR SURE. Focus on recipes. Most recipes are just tweaked original/staple recipes. The rest will follow.
Thumbs up bro!

Thanks so much for the useful feedback and information, guys!
While I realize that it's not totally necessary to do the school, since I've been out of the party/bar scene for a while it will be useful to me anyway and the connections will be invaluable. I talked to the owner of the school today about their 90%+ job placement rate and she explained that some people simply can't be bothered to get off the couch and those are the only ones that aren't placed. She added that I seem very articulate and that this will make getting a bartending position that much easier.
The school is set up like an actual bar and 3/4ths of the class time is hands-on practice and drills/simulation, so I think what they sell the school on (and sell you on to employers that refer to them) is that you end up having essentially bona fide bartending experience by the time you're looking for a job.
I am very optimistic for my near future for the first time in a while . I think this will be a great catalyst to becoming financially independent and GTFOing from my parents house. Especially since I'm planning on moving potentially to a different city soon... I can't think of a better nomadic skill to have, and as someone pointed out: maybe my sentence I served at McDonalds will pay off with my recent customer service experience bolstering my employability!
I appreciate all of you

well if the 90% connections/placement is really THAT good, that money might be worth it, but there are lots of bartending schools that go for much less and also promise networking/placement. i think it's probably more dependent on you taking the info in (which will be the same at all schools), getting the practice in (same at all schools), and getting your ass to bars/hounding them/really risking yourself with your resume.

seriously dude, before you invest the money, make a resume, look in the help wanted, and 'knock on doors' i give you 75% chance of finding a job in 14 days if you spend 7 days applying for jobs, talking to mangers, owners, who ever can give you the job.
hand shakes and conversation go a long way in this business.

I say its a scam. Talk to a real bartender. Go up to them and asked how THEY got started. I just look at it from this point of view. If you can do the same thing without paying GOD KNOWS HOW MUCH MONEY to these people for "teaching" you then why actually give them money? And besides 90% is a great number but i dont know anyone who talks bad about their business ya dig?
I say save your money. Go buy a pint from some bartender and just ask. It wont hurt. And just don't ask one ask many.
Im sure you're excited but seriously coming from someone who used to this, You're better off saving your bucks for a nice bottle opener and some nonslip shoes. and maybe some herb.

That's a fucking brilliant idea BlindEye. I might actually go walk to this pub near me and grab a beer and ask the bloke who serves me for advice.
With the weather here in Missouri, it's bound to be as empty as the restaurant I was just at.

I'll report back what he says

Dude I bet college was awesome for you Rock on man
Time go get dressed I guess lol... the bar's a mile away, right next to my DXM dispensary (the grocery store ), so this walk should be interesting. I had forgotten that I'm not drinking along with another Shroomerite until Xmas but we both already had a slip up (including today) so this kind of has to be today anyway.
Wouldn't it be sweet if this led to landing a job so close to my house!??

I'm enjoying a Winter Old Fashioned and some delicious hummus right now!
One of the bartenders chatted with me and gave me tons of good info.
Bartending school, to hear a bartender tell it, is a joke and a way to get laughed at behind your back. Working your way up seems to be the way to go, staring as a waiter or barback. She recommended applying as a waiter but letting them know your ambitions and that you're willing to work hard and do anything they need but want to end up behind the bar.
Just talked to the other bartender and he got in by working his way up as well.

My gf was a bartender for several years, and I'm friends with a few bartenders. They all say school is a waste of time. People usually order simple drinks, and more complicated drinks can be found online.

I have an oppurtunity to like my brother a few years ago, live with my Grandfather and bartend at his pub/hotel. This is in a tiny town in Scandinavia though and would require learning Finnish. But I could do it at 18. I just think going in Winter would be a shock coming from Los Angeles.
So many drunks in Finland, its crazy.

Bartending school, to hear a bartender tell it, is a joke and a way to get laughed at behind your back.

Just sayin'

I have 29 years in the bar and restaurant biz. Blindeye is right. You may have to work your way in and when you do it's pretty good. Talking to the bartenders is the best info you're going to get. Worked about 39 hours this week and made 900.00. It fluctuates though. I average about 600.00 in the 3 days I work at one place (7-10 hour shifts), and another part time job waiting I make anywhere between 50-100 a shift in 4-5 hours. So I work maybe 32-36 hours a week and average 7-900 a week.
The person that said say goodbye to all the fun holidays because you'll be working was right. Not to mention New Years day! I am completely burned out. I will be Nursing this time next year though! I went back to school and have an RN degree now. The state boards are my worst enemy. I have been trying to pass it for 2 years now. Got another coming up. I'll pass.
The average wages at most middle of the road places is about 20 bucks an hour give or take a few. You'll get regulars and some big tips occasionally. A coworker got an 80 dollar tip the other night for checking on a TV channel for them. The inconsistency is what I can not take anymore. That and stupid things like retirement, insurance etc...

Wow dude thanks for the detailed reply! The bartenders definitely had good information, and it seems clear that bartending school is a little bit dubious.
If you don't mind me asking, do you have to work your way up to each bartending gig you get? Or, once you've been a bona fide bartender for a while somewhere, can you realistically expect to be able to find a bartending gig immediately/enter at that level at a different establishment in a different city if (when, in my case) you move?

Nice 5 shrooms for you.

Once you get the experience in it is easier to just go in as a bartender. In corporate places like Outback, Chilis etc... they make you work up through the waitstaff most of the time. I have seen bar people come in as a bartender though. Best bet is to hit the local bars. You would do good to just go in as a barback and that way you can observe and learn from there. Some bartenders tip the barbacks really well because a barback can make the bartending job very easy, or very hard.
The one who said most drinks are just highballs and a few mixed drinks is right. Only younger folks order the crazy drinks mostly. There is usually a rolodex/index card thing for looking up drinks for quick reference, if not the phones have internet for quick reference. the people that order the unusual shot/drink usually know what is in them, and it is usually equal proportions of liquors.
Then there is the way you relate to people in general. One has to be socially fluid, talk/listen on many subjects, and carry on idle conversation mostly. If you get too deep it can cause problems like the person getting offended on your opinion on certain subjects. Keep it light and remain neutral is my best advice for getting that good tip. Some people have a set amount when they come in. They will not tip you more just because you chatted them up. Some people will. It's all a game and can be really fun and enlightening. Listening is key to the bartending job, and talking when asked questions. Don't be too boisterous, and don't be too shy.
And I have a strict rule to NEVER drink on the job. Maybe a shot at the end of the shift if you are in a neighborhood bar type place. Not worth the risk at a corporate place unless the manager has one with you at the end of the shift. Don't ask if you can have a drink either, wait for the manager to ask you. Getting a buzz defeats the purpose of having the drink for me. I like to work totally sober (maybe some caffeine). But that's just me. If I am drinking the last fucking thing I want to do is work!
PS, Never get really wasted at the place you work either.
