Monobucket not colonizing
    #19270841 - 12/13/13 01:47 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys, I have a bit of an issue. I have a monobucket that I filled with coir/verm/gypsum that I pasteurized in a modified bucket tek (water heated to 190, not boiling), please don't flame me for the bucket tek, it was a bit of an experiment and I normally jar pasteurize. Anyways, it's been 9 days since I spawned with a quart of spawn, and the grains have only recovered, they haven't taken over any of the coir. It's very strange, the tub smells fine, just like good ole coir. It is by the window and the temperatures outside have been in the 10's the last few nights, so that could be it, but even still I feel like the grains should be doing something! Any help is much appreciated.

No, only a half brick of coir. It should be around 1:4, maybe a tiny bit more than that. I'm taking a pic now.

too wet coir?
makes my colonizing times much higher.
some form of bacteria in the jars maybe?

It's on the dry side of field capacity if anything. And I'm 95% sure it's not contaminated since it smells just fine. I've had bacterial contams in monotubs and I gagged when I opened them. :puke:

Oh, and thanks for the quick responses guys, you're all awesome.

For using a 1 to 4 and being so cold it's ~probably~ ok for being 9 days old.

You think so? I mean it looks like just about none of the coir has been colonized and I've had monos done in 10 days. If you guys say the cold then I believe you, I'm just paranoid

this happened to me with rye berries are coir once, it was bacteria, but u could smell it 2nd day, sweet apples or something like that.  not trying to scare you. but thinking about it...9 days is a while for not spreading to any coir, it should have at least spread a little, right?  is there warmth coming from the substrate?  maybe it is that cold in ur grow area. is there sweat on the sides of the bucket?

I haven't decided about the holes yet. It's right next to my air vent so I might go hole less and see what happens. And yeah, I agree, the grains are forming nice outstretched rhizo's, but not wanting anything to do with the coir. I did realize today that my vent was closed, and as a result my room has been fairly cold. I'll try bringing in a space heater and see if that helps. My guess is too cold until I smell otherwise.
