Wood lovers on straw?

hey i did a quick search and couldnt find much, so i am asking all of you!
have any of your had experience with wood-loving species like Ovids or Azures on Straw substrates.
i'm planning an outdoor bed for the spring and i want to get things started when it comes to spawn runs and stuff, but i have two bails of straw kickin around from my last projects last year, and i would love to use it up in the outdoor bed....
i live in Canada i'm looking to make a bed that is semi-perennial and hopefully able to withstand the cold winter, any species sugestions, i have cyans, azures, cyanofiscosa, and a bunch of ovoids?
edit just thinking now, i have used straw for woodloving edibles (oysters mainly) so i'm thinking it should be fine. but please gimmie your thoughts

I don't know much about it but I have heard people say that the mushrooms don't seem to have as long of a shelf life when fresh using only straw on woodlovers. Beats me though

yeah but with an outdoor patch i can just find wood and throw it on top to add longevity to the project. maybe ill stick a big old stump into it standing upright and see if it colonizes. wouldn't a pillar of mushrooms look nice in the garden?
im also thinking about doing this with them http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16395469
put them by the pond again as decoration!
much love thanks for the reply

Spawn outdoors to woodchips and sawdust with a little dirt thrown in. Case with the straw.
Straw is best for Cubensis and Oysters. Most woodlovers want wood.

Ps. Woodlovers love straw... at least the ones i've grown, Azure, Cyans, Allensi.
I use shredded straw mixed in layers with variable sized woodchips and sawdust. Also as mentioned by 365, it makes a good mulch on top. Although putting a straw mulch on top makes the bed easy to spot from 100 paces. I use leaves and debris where privacy is key.

You're not just using straw.

Like I said... MIXED in with woodchips and sawdust in LAYERS.
My point? To the OP... my direct personal experience indicates to me that chopped straw is beneficial INSIDE the bed, not just as mulch.
You said put the straw on top and not in the bed. I mentioned that chopped straw inside the bed, mixed with chips & sawdust, in layers works excellent.
It worked for Azures over the years and Cyans and Allensi.
I was giving an answer based on experience.
Wasn't trying to offend you 365.

The straw helps to colonize quicker because of the smaller particles, and provides a minimal amount of nutrients, but sawdust would do the same while providing more nutrients that can be used by your woodlovers.
Layered into the sub or mixed in thoroughly doesn't matter. Your mycelium acts as one organism and shares nutrients throughout.

if only it were that simple. for some reason the only fuel pellets they sell around here are softwood, and the animal bedding is pine. GREAT. for my shiitake project a few years ago i was literally forced to sit in my garage with a rasp and shred the hell out of an old maple stump i have from a tree i cut down in my yard. i think i better get started shredding again lol.

get smoking chips then. And come spring find some arborists and ask them to dump the chips in your yard.
Or scope out some new construction sites. The pretty much all use woodchips for fill now, so go fill some buckets or garbage cans.

you can always go driving and look for places were they have cut down a lot of trees, theres normally a patch of chips somewhere, theres a huge mountain of woodchips across from my house where they cut the woods down a few years ago.

You have to be careful of what kind of wood it is though. Make sure to get hardwood.
