the onion is at it again: Being Too Rich Is A Disability
    #19270489 - 12/13/13 12:11 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Teen who killed four while driving drunk spared jail because his rich parents spoiled him

His lawyers said the 16-year-old had been so spoiled by his doting and affluent parents he had no idea of the consequence of his actions

A rich teenager in Texas who killed four people while driving under the influence of drugs and drink got a slap on the wrist after his lawyers argued he was the victim of "affluenza."
Ethan Couch received 10 years probation - rather than the possible 20-year jail term he faced as a result of his irresponsible actions.
His lawyers said the 16-year-old had been so spoiled by his doting and affluent parents he had no idea of the consequence of his actions or the concept of taking responsibility for what he did.

Dr. G. Dick Miller, a psychologist hired by the defence said Couch was never disciplined, abused alcohol and had "freedoms no young person should have," including being allowed to drive when he was 13.
"The teen never learned to say that you're sorry if you hurt someone," Dr. Miller added, according to a report in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "If you hurt someone, you sent him money."
Couch was a victim of "affluenza," a rich-kid syndrome that led him to believe money solved everything.

The sentence can only confirm the young man's sense of entitlement. His parents will pay US$450,000 to send him for mandatory therapy - money far beyond the capacity of most criminal defendants.

The victims' families were stunned by the decision of State District Judge Jean Boyd.
"We had over 180 years of life taken, future life not 180 years lived, but 180 years of future life taken and two of those were my wife and daughter," said Eric Boyles.
Hollie Boyles, 52, and Shelby, 21, went to help Breanna Mitchell, 24, after her SUV broke down on a dark country road near Burleson, Tex., south of Fort Worth.
Brian Jennings, 41, a youth pastor, also pulled over to see if he could help.
All four were killed when Couch, high on Valium and alcohol, plowed into them at the wheel of his pickup truck at an estimated speed of 112 kilometres per hour.

They were not the only victims: 11 people in all, were injured including two teens who were left paralyzed after being thrown from the truck on that June night.
The vehicle also hit a parked car, sending it into a Volkswagen Beetle driving in the opposite direction.
The youths had been partying with beer they stole from Walmart and were looking for more booze.
Couch admitted to being under the influence. At the time of the crash, his blood alcohol was three times above the legal limit.

Speaking about the punishment of probation, Scott Brown, his lawyer, said, "There is nothing the judge could have done to lessen the suffering for any of those families."
Couch's lawyers argued the boy's parents should share the blame for the crash, because they gave him everything he wanted. They pleaded for a sentence that involved therapy in southern California, rather than putting him behind bars.
"She [the judge] fashioned a sentence that is going to keep Ethan under the thumb of the justice system for the next 10 years," Mr. Brown said.
"And if Ethan doesn't do what he's supposed to do, if he has one misstep at all then this judge or an adult judge when he's transferred can then incarcerate him."

Judge Boyd's decision left the victims families' bereft and enraged.
"Money always seems to keep Ethan out of trouble," said Mr. Boyles.
"This was one time I did ask the court, that for justice, for money not to prevail and ultimately today I felt like money did prevail."

Couch and his parents - his father owns a metal roofing company - face at least five lawsuits from families of his victims claiming millions in damages.

Just read an article about this shit, makes me a little sick to my stomach. But if you think about it, even though this kid isn't going to jail he still has to deal with the rest of the world. This should be fun...

This was nice. I believe I read a satire on it along time ago. I don't remember exactly when I first read it but I do vividly recall the ecstatic joy associated with reading it.

I was right outside of a park sitting on a bench when I first opened the first page of this book. The words came out at me and I understood that something was sending me symbols from somewhere, as if they were trying to suggest some new temporal world to me for a moment before I returned to my own reality. I don't believe the symbols spoke anything of my life. There were a few people that walked past us and were holding umbrellas over themselves, as if suggesting that they had a vague notion that the possibility of it raining was highly likely.
I have no doubt that he failed the expectations of those that indulged him for his every whim, and good luck to the person that must find the child a treatment center to resolve his difficulties.

I have no doubt that the boy was doing this seeking to gain the attention of parental counselors so that he may discover a method he may introduce to impose discipline by counteracting his urge to act out by preventing him from acting on his impulses by blocking him by suggesting that he control himself.

We must monitor these people to make sure that they don't act out, we need to make sure they don't ever do anything too reckless. Its important to note that these people are usually between the ages of 10-18 and haven't a clue as to where or what they are doing here, they are still finding there place in the world and are probably for the most part lost.

However there are some of us that accept that they are fully accountable for their every move & noone else can inform that that they are otherwise unaccountable for anything they do. We may show no reluctance to deciding to hide the fact that we always knew this. We knew it somewhere but we never accepted it as fact. We wanted it to look like a fact but was it in our eyes? Were we being fed with facts or lies? Were we in Las Vegas three years ago? Did we end up going to that show that was canceled last minute?

Ehhh, the kid is the one that deserves to be bankrupt for the rest of his life. I guess we can blame the parents for putting this kid on the planet and spoiling the fuck out of him.

The rest of his life should be pretty shitty though, wonder who the hell is ever going to hire him. I guess you're right, this can be a good thing. Once daddy goes bankrupt he will be fucked.

I saw this on the news today and it's crazy...we had to look up the word Affluenza!

Dumb spoiled brats. He should be in jail. It isn't fully the parents job to give their child a full perspective; he or she should be able to see that actions have consequences by the age to drive. Or he's autistic.

What a great lesson to teach the kid. He's filthy rich, we should let him off easy. If he's poor, than into jail he goes.

The thinking behind this: The rich irresponsible kid will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars, which will benefit the local economy. The poor kid will more than likely cost welfare at some point. Therefore, society needs that rich kid to spend. He can't do that in jail.

Wow. The the logic in this one...

Kid kills a bunch of people, but we're gonna let him off easy because it's not his fault he was let off easy his whole life.

I don't think he should get 20 years but he should do a minimum of a year in county IMO.

It seems like he is right, maybe he is more enlightened than most. At least it's working for him.

I like how they call him a 'victim' of affluenza also

I think 5 years should be the max amount of time someone could spend in jail for manslaughter. The kid didn't intentionally kill those people, but should pay more than 10 years probation. I'd give him 3 years in jail, then 10 years probation.

Manslaughter is a tricky issue, personally I don't believe in any blanket penalties regarding these instances. On the one hand one could be entirely out of fault, having a heart attack behind the wheel and careening into a pedestrian. On the other hand you have a drunken idiot driving recklessly and killing or maiming half a dozen.

3 years in jail for ending or otherwise severely obstructing several lives? I'd give him a firing squad.

Unintentional. We all make mistakes. His mistake ended in ACCIDENTALLY killing some people. What good is it to ruin his young life as well? Got to give him a chance to do as much good as possible to make up for the mistake IMO. I think 3 years is enough time to reflect on his actions, unfortunately he got no time an his sense of entitlement builds
