HEEEELP!!!!!!!!!

I'm an absolute newbie. I Grew these cakes without labels thinking that on the outside chance I actually got some shrooms they would be easily identifiable. Wrong!!!! The first 2 pics are of one from the cake's 2nd flush. It's 3 ins long and 1 1/2 diameter cap. It's weight 8gr when harvested and 6 pictured 8hrs later. Bruising and spores are blue.

The next 2 are of a difference strain's first flush still on the cake. Can you still me what kind and if they are ready for harvest.

I hope the pics are clear enough there is enough info to help. Thanks

They are indeed very easy to identify! They are all Psilocybe cubensis! The second cake looks like it could wait another 2 days before harvesting.

No, no one can tell you that. It makes absolutely no difference anyway. They are not PE, because those are bred for specific macroscopic features. If you only had GT besides them, then the vendor decided to call these GT.

Wow! So no matter what you order, the vendor can send anything if there's no way to tell? Especially for the inexperienced. Thanks, Tangich! I had always heard that difference strains produce difference results. Is that not true?

It is true to some macroscopic features but they are all the same species.
I have a friend who is a vendor and he cares very much about keeping the strain names correct. He will not just sell whatever and call it whatever he wants.
The vendors here have scruples. So, for some it does not matter what they are looking at because they are all the "same" but others want an albino or whatever.
But all vendor spores are for microscopy only!

Well, it's a bit more complicated than that. Every single print can produce hugely variable characteristics, including the 'potency', size, visual appearance, speed of mycelial growth and fruit production etc. And all those characteristics are also dependent on external factors, substrate, conditions, temperature, humidity... In short, all the 'info' the vendors write 'This strain is like this' 'This one is more visual' 'This one is _____' is bullshit. Some strains are bred for a certain characteristic they display, like PE, albinos, red spores and so on, but most of them are just good, strong, properly domesticated 'strains', and it really shouldn't bother you which one you have. That becomes important only when you start trading.

Indeed. But OP was not asking for anything more than what I explained.

I see no reason to get any more in depth with the topic than that.

My work surface is cluttered at the moment, so my typing is very slow. I was actually replying to the OP with my 'it's more complicated than that' comment, before I saw your post. You explained it all very well!

Nothing much in this case. It's a useful characteristic in some other Psilocybe species, to differentiate them from similar very toxic Galerina and some other species, which have different colored spores.

Generally spore print color just helps separate different genera of mushrooms. This link might have some useful info for ya: Making Spore Prints
