Got my hands on this baby today. Sign said "Cactaceae", can't argue with that, but it was a bit vague.

Anyone care to inform me on a more specific ID?

Perhaps Ferocactus horridus v. brevispina

I am not familiar with most Ferocacti, but I tend to think of these as F. townsendianus. It may seem strange, but this actually doesn't contradict what MH has suggested: apparently, both F. horridus var. brevispinus and F. townsendianus are considered by some to be varieties of F. peninsulae.
