Good uses for old wide mouth half pint jars?!
    #19270345 - 12/13/13 11:32 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Does anybody have any good and useful ideas for utilizing all those old wide mouth half pint jars? I can only think of no pour agar jars.

If you aren't using them just sell them.  They will sell for 6-8$ / dozen.  They can be used for canning.  Make some award winning pickles next year.  Grow some pickles and such.
If you can't find a mycological use for them use them for something else or sell them.
They are great for gifting weed in and curing weed too.

I love them for LC.  Make batches of 7 quarts at a time.

I guess I don't have to use them for cultivation... Just always want to find a use for everything I have.

Why does everyone keep saying they wouldn't touch liquid culture? He's asking what COULD you use the jars for. You COULD use them for liquid culture. No one is telling him to.

Fr the most part LCs are an extra step and a waste of time.

But this is not a LC vs agar battle.
That has been covered in depth elsewhere.

No need to be sorry. Was more talking to Phil Collins right there asking why no one likes LC.
I will probably just use them fr no pour agar jars. I haven't got the confidence to start pouring in my petris yet.

Use them for cups.

And if LC is so bad and prone to contam, why the hell is it that every vendor ever sells all their edibles in LC, with a cleanliness guarantee?

Dont know!  I have great success with LC and agar.  Prefer having LC around then using just agar.

I've been using agar plates grown out to shoot sterilized water into, mix it/disturb it a bit, suck it right back up, and innoc with that.  I was scared to try it (got advice from another member, will not say their name because of LC scare), but it worked well so far, only done it twice...I don't recommend it though, its mentally frightening because u never know how clean that needle is, or how clean it will stay.  I did it because increased colonization time, but its not worth the danger, and its not that much faster than putting a large wedge of agar in a jar.

vendors sell LC's because they are easy to ship, receive, then use, and they have labs with totally clean conditions that they can make one with no problems.  I just used a blue oyster LC from a vendor and its soooo fast! just 5cc's in a FULL quart of WBS is speeding right along the cubes innoced 4 days earlier, but oyster myc is faster in general IME.  (thats actually what gave me the idea to experiment with LC's again (I have had them fail in past and fuck up grows)

You may want to make cakes again for testing isolates and cultures and stuff. That's what I use them for.

They're handy for no-pour agar.
