foil off immediately after sterilization. Keeps the dry verm barrier DRY if it's wet contams can colonize through it. Foil helps keep the verm barrier moist

Hey guys, I'm working on my SGFC. Do you think there are enough holes on the lid or should I drill around the edge as well? As you can see my lid has a decorative identation.

1/4 inch holes every 2 inches on all sides of the chamber, do it right the first time, because it's easier to duct tape some later, if you're humidity is too low, than to take it all apart and redrill them again. that includes the bottom, you gotta elevate the sgfc to humidity rises through the perlite

I raised mine up with cd cases and put a metal mixing bowl underneath just in case water leaked through, trust me I've had to redrill and it's a pain in the butt.

Fruiting Chamber A SGFC has 1/4" holes spaces 2 inches apart in a grid patten on all six sides. 4-6 inches of moist perlite. No attachments made to it with any extra things like humidifiers. Optimally the SGFC should be in the middle of a room. No fans should be run in the room with the SGFC, but a cracked window is OK. A humidifier in your house can help to raise the ambient RH but don't put it near your SGFC put it in the other corner of the room if you do decide to run a humidifier at all. The SGFC IMO should have at least 6-12 inches of room from any wall on all 6 sides. This includes finding some sort of raisers to elevate the SGFC off of the surface it's on. This is what can happen if you make your SGFC the right way. Here's what will happen if you do it the wrong way. You'll likely rage quit.
Misting and Fanning. This is a source of much grief and 100's of posts a week here. Misting and fanning is not at all complicated as it needs to be. In general you'll mist your cakes until they glisten(yes they can even with the verm on them) and then fan right after the mist. You can mist your cakes directly and you should. When you notice the cake is no longer glistening you can mist it again and then fan. This occurs on average of 3-5 times a day. Don't worry about sleeping or being gone 12 hours. Just do it when you're around and don't forget about it is all. Fanning is not FAE it's only purpose is to relive the high RH air so that the cakes can get a kickstart on evaporation.
FAE This is a phenomenon (Fresh air exchange) in a properly built SGFC this is constantly happening. The perlite is naturally cooler than the surrounding air this moves molecules closer to eachother as the lose kinetic energy. This creates low pressure which pulls air up through the bottom holes. As the air moves through the perlite it picks up humidity and keeps the chamber at or above 90%RH. This occurs naturally without the fanning and is why we like to have no fans in the room and is also why fanning after misting is not a replacement for FAE.

I'm getting ready to send several cakes to a SGFC. I am however tinkering with an aquarium setup just to see how that works. I had two cakes ready to go. Because I know aquariums get dogged a bit here I figured I'd be willing to "sacrifice" two just to experiment and see how it goes.
This is right after I finished the setup. I have a bubbler, 14" strip on the bottom of the tank and water just below the surface of the hydroton.

This is about 12 hours later. 93% humidity and 79F.

I'll post the SGFC pics this weekend.

My concern with the aquarium is that I'm not sure there's much evaporation as it's constantly super humid. Unless I'm supposed to take the lid off an occasionally fan the cakes to cause evaporation?

You're asking for a bacterial problem, and awkward looking shrooms. The best light for mushrooms is 6500Kalvin from a florescent bulb. The spiral ones work great they're labeled daylight,.
You need FAE for your mushrooms to pin and grow properly. That's like 3-10 full air evacuations per hour(depending on how much substrate you have). You're not suposted to use a tub with no holes filled with hydroton. At the same time you're getting the FAE you want the RH to be above 95% the cheap meter you have is garbage and unreliable for measuring humidity all the numbers that thing reads other than temperature can be assumed to be false. Get one that you can calibrate regularly(like weekly) the cigar humidor ones that are analog are the best thing that is anywhere near affordable. You want any moisture that's on your cakes to slowly evaporate from the FAE despite being in a high RH environment. The evaporation slowly off the surface of the cakes is the major pinning trigger.
Quote:
A double outlet 100 gallon aquarium pump in a shotgun terrarium will result in about ten percent of the air exchange you would get naturally, plus destroy the flow of air up through the perlite, causing all sorts of problems. RR
People seriously doubt how much FAE a real SGFC produces.
That bubble strip isn't going to do much for you except cost a lot. You might get a lot of air but it's not lowering the concentration of CO2. If you had a CO2 meter you would be able to figure out just how much FAE you need be it 3 to 10 times an hour to keep the CO2 levels low enough. A SGFC does an amazing job at keeping CO2 levels proper
I don't like to go posting RR all day, but here's some good supplemental reading material.

Is is still okay to fan and mist 3 or 4 times a day? im really new to this so idk how long to keep on my pump and how much to fan ect and my hygrometer wont detect the humidity right i think its cuz i set it in wet perlite
1. I assume your hygrometer doesn't work because it's made in china.
2. There is absolutely no reason ever to filter the air to a fruiting chamber.
3. As for using fish pumps for fresh air exchange, the search posts feature at the top of every page is your friend, since your question has been answered literally hundreds of times. RR

anonjon said: im guessing air exchanges per hour is some standard term in production scale mushroom farming?
Actually, it's a figure someone pulled out of his ass. Think of it this way: One substrate in a large grow room wouldn't need but one air exchange per week to stay within the maximum CO2 level. However, thousands of substrates stacked to the ceiling on full shelves might need one air exchange every 5 minutes to remain below 1000 ppm of CO2.
A complete air exchange means calculating the total cubic feet area of a room, and then getting a blower which can move that amount of air in one hour. Such would be 1 air exchange per hour. If you had a blower which could move ten times that amount, you could run it five minutes on/five minutes off to obtain 5 air exchanges per hour. However, the bottom line is to get a CO2 meter and adjust air exchange to remain within the limit of 1000 ppm.
I try to keep it below 600 ppm in my farm, but on hot days when the incoming air is less dense, that's hard to do even with my blower running 24/7. This winter when the incoming air is more dense, I'll have to plug my cycle timer back in. RR

I appreciate the feedback. I think I'm going to dunk a few more cakes that were just a bit behind these in terms of consolidation. That means tomorrow at around Noon, I'll put those freshly dunked [and rolled] cakes into a proper SGFC. Is it too late to take these two aquarium cakes and put them into the SGFC as well?
Ultimately I don't want to do this aquarium deal if it's not going to work.

never to late. I have a feeling if you misted enough just leaving a cake out on a shelf would be a better fruiting that most home made tubs. You want the PPM of CO2 to be under 1000, that's the criterion for proper FAE if your FAE does that then you're good. You're going to stay below 1000PPM just leaving a cake on a table but you'll have to mist a shitload. In an aquarium you have the humidity you need but your PPM of CO2 can easily go over 1000 and a air stone or pump is going to have a very hard time keeping you in a good range if at all. Now using a MS injection some strain in your cake is going to fruit in those adverse environments, but they'll probably look sub par.

Picture update!

It took a while to see pins but they finally started to form and now they're really making some progress. These cakes were birthed about 2 weeks ago. Looks like I'll be celebrating my first harvest soon.
I'm going to take one of the fruits and place some tissue into an agar dish. I want to do this again, I just have to figure out if I go with cakes or transition to trays/tubs.

I have a question! This top shroom is ready to harvest today perhaps. I want to catch it right before it tears the veil. But, the ones near it aren't ready. Do I wait for the others to catch up...or do I harvest the larger shroom risking damaging or upsetting the others?

Edited the photo to make it focus on the cake.

By the way check out this bad boy, I can't wait to see how this plays out in a week! This one is in another tub on my dresser.

Two things I've learned in my first attempt at cakes.
1. Mushrooms pin and fruit when they're ready, not when I'm ready.
2. I used the tall half pint jar instead of the stout variety. If I do cakes again I'll buy the fatter kind.

Would you then harvest the stem of that fruit when you harvest the rest? Is this not to disturb the mycelium distribution in the cake?

Could you just snip it at the base of the stem and the rest of the fruits wouldn't be disturbed? Would yanking it out of the cake disturb the other fruits? Thanks. And OP, your grow looks like it's going great. Keep us posted I'm looking forward to your next update.

I didn't want to make another thread to show off my latest pics so I'm borrowing my first thread from a while back. Anyway, I tend to get bored and start to fuck around.
Some pics of what I'm tinkering with. I have a couple brf jars going, neither are the proper size but I think it'll be ok. Started messing around with the pp5 containers as well.
Cased a PP5 container yesterday, I have a bit too much spawn but I think it'll be ok.

A pp5 container waiting to be colonized

Another pp5 container cased and probably not quite enough spawn. This was my first attempt at this method so the next containers should be more like half full of seed rather than 1/3 or 3/4

Yep, a pp5 brf container, had to try it. It does take quite some time to get just to this stage, I'm hoping it doesn't pin soon

Another pp5 cake in the making

Almost theeeerreee...almost theeeerrreeee [star wars reference]

Mycelium is beautiful

Pint jar, thought I'd try it out

Grass seed in a pp5 colonizing

My incubation closet

pp5 v tek style with brf works well! esp cased!

vs uncased

id say ur spawn amt is ok, just lighten up on casing (based on ur pics). the spawn is what will make the fruits/yeild, the casing just protects/helps them. when using the short containers, u will need to get a proper fruiting chamber because the lids will need to come off. SGFC is my go to

Yeah I have two SGFC's sitting waiting to put these bad boys in. The casing layer is a tad thinner than what the pictures show [i think]. I used my [sanitized glove on] finger to lightly nudge the soil up against the side of the container.
I'll give it I guess a week to 10 days to colonize the casing layer and then fruit those bad boys.
Once I'm done with these jars I'm not doing the prf tek anymore. It was nice to get started and get introduced to the hobby but I really like working with grains.
I'm also going to start working with brown rice.

i have only used WBR as spawn twice, and its ok, can't seem to tell a difference btw that and rye/wbs . just did a casing of a mono the other day (first time casing a mono, usually case smaller things like trays) and i think i made it too thick as well...
