X-plate, Y-plate, Mono plate? Would i be wrong in assuming a mono plate can be treated the as the other plates, just doesn't have walls.

y or x plates are preferable as you can have multiple strain/species in one plate.

I got a bunch of glass ones for free. But I'm thinking about getting Y plates just to make my life easier. X plates seem small but I've never used one though.
Violets no pour agar seems to be one of the better no pour teks. I'm sure you can distill the good info from the thread

I guess I never pondered. Do you have to pour each spot on a y or x dish separately? if there's a film of agar over the top of the dividers wouldn't the culture grow over to the other parts of the dish.

Don't allow it to overflow into the next section. If you haven't picked up RR's dvd's I suggest that you do. Very informative.

trust me I've seen them. if you're not letting it over flow then you're pouring each section individually. I work with agar all the time I've just never used anything but the plain circle kind. I don't think RR addresses the Y and X dish pouring method in the DVD unless I'm mistaken.

You are mistaken. He uses 3 section dishes in the agar prep video. Re-watch it and you shouldn't have any more questions.

haha alright it's been over a year since I checked them out. My agar technique has gotten good these days, It's probably why I avoided them(Y+X) when I first started agar.

You can get more done in three section dishes, obviously. Just don't fill them up all of the way.

If you sterilize your agar mixture prior to pouring it there's no need to PC your receiving dishes. The plastic dishes come sterile in a plastic sleeve.

I've tried those plastic things and they are way to big. I pour two stacks with a liter of agar into 40 dishes in one shot. Much better for me.

i think he meant u can't PC them after first use....I use PP5 4 ounce containers now, I started with plastic petris from mycosupply, the full circle and y plates. just didn't want to keep buying them... if i had to choose id say go with y plates, or if u wanna save money, go with 4 ounce PP5's, via pastywhite tek.. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976 cheaper and (many would say) easier than standard agar teks.
works really well whether u use his medium recipe or a pre made powder from vendor, or ur own. cube myc:

shiitaki myc:

u can use the full circle regular plastic petris and just do 3 separate innoc points, just watch it carefully before they meet (this one had transfers taken from it):

I bought those plastic thingys and I will keep the 4 that I have for emergency situations but I'm sticking with the disposable plastic sleeves. That write up is for someone who has trouble pouring agar. I've had a couple of years of practice and feel comfortable pouring my own. It's actually fun now!
