An 8 qt PC is gonna hold just a few pints max. Trust me, get the 23 qt. Be patient and save however long you have to to get the right stuff.

I agree.  although honestly I would recommend that if you're going to get a pressure cooker, spend the $ for at least a 16qt.  I did, and am quite happy with the quart jar capacity.  fits a ton of BRF jars, and gives a pretty decent capacity for getting started with anything with quart jars...  mostly been pasteurizing quart jars of bulk substrate, but really looking forward to getting into doing grains for my second grow, so personally I think 16qt is the most versatile and worth the money if you're going to get a PC for anything.  hell, a 22qt (23? haha) wouldn't be much worse, not terribly expensive either.  only my opinion though, go for whatever you want

An 8 quart will atleast do 2 quart size jars, which used to spawn bulk will produce more then enough for 1 person to trip often. Even several 1/2 pint jars will produce plenty. He's not looking to do several monotubs. Hell you could sterilize 2 quarts a day for 7 days and have enough for 2 monotubs and a single monotub done properly can easily produce several Ozs.

I guess if you want to noc 2 quarts a day for a week, sterile procedure daily, electricity to run a PC for 4 hours every day (not counting the grain prep time), time, blech!!  I'd say save up another $50 and do it right. The timelines for that method will kill your enthusiasm quickly I think. If you really have that much time on your hands your gonna be watching those jars (all on a different timeline) incessantly.........

Yea like I said it was 90% so I could get into agar.  Someone pm me offering to try and work something out for his 23qt. So I'll see what happens with that first.

That was just an extreme example but you could do 2 quarts every weekend and have a good rotation. Once they start fruiting you can keep it going. Could have a nice harvest every week. Op said he was only looking to do a couple lbs of rye not everybody is looking to produce way more then they can consume and me personally I'm lucky if I have $15 every 2 weeks to spare for this hobby say I can sympathize with him.

You can do plenty of agar in any size PC. Just gotta focus on your sterile techniques when pouring and what not.

2 quarts isn't shit. You could do 3 batches of 2 quarts or you could do one batch of 5-7 quarts. On a small scale, that's 2 masters and a tub in one shot.

It's seriously just a waste of time to buy a PC that won't at least do enough jars for one tub. Like I sais, if cost is an issue, save $10 per week for however long it takes.

How many shrooms do you think he needs? Even if he gets just a single one oz harvest thats enough to take a 5 gram dose every week for 5 weeks plenty of time to grow another oz with minimal effort!

Please get off your high horse 36

thats a pretty tiny pc, its all about how much you wanna grow.  its a good starter pc i guess and later you can get bigger one and use that for agar and sterilizing equipment etc

I've been known to eat an oz at a time on occasion. It's not that uncommon.

Get off your big wheel till you know how to give advice that makes things more efficient.

my friends 8q only holds to laying down side by side. Mine fits 4 standing up. Hopefully you get the one that fits 4 standing up.

Either way two quarts is plenty for a small time grower. You could take 1 quart spawn and then 2 quarts of substrate mix it into a 6q plastic shoe box and fruit it for ~1oz dry give of take and genetics. So those two quarts would make two bricks. Alternatively you could do 2q spawn and 2q substrate and only make one brick.

my 8q is stall and skinny the lid is domed so the quart jars fit just barely all 4 of them

the 8q my friend has the quart jars won't stand up in so only two can go in on their sides.

Mine looks sort of like this

his looks like this but way way older

A 23 q Presto PC is a much wiser investment for a new grower, than the 8 quart the OP mentioned purchasing - and for not much more $$; while offering enough room to grow with the hobby, if the OP finds he actually likes it.

Sure, it's not a $600 All American, but that's a big unnecessary for expense for most home growers.

I wouldn't want a 23Q PC and i've been doing this for a while now. Can't foresee ever needing to do more than 4 quart jars at a time and even then sometimes I only run my PC with two quarts in it.

It really depends on what you're going for. I'm happy having a small PC that I can throw in a cupboard

True - ultimately it's up to personal preference.

I found a very lightly 23 quart PC on Craigslist for $30 - he even through in a case of quart jars and tons of lids.  Ironically, he admitted he only used it to "grow mushrooms."

nice. I paid 20 for my 8 quart and nothing came included. Lady said she used it for pot roast and she was looking OLD like already crumbling and turning back into earth old.

I am very glad that I have a 16qt.  Will hold a total of 7 standard sized quarts.  This is one tub + 2 master jars.

OR:  It holds 8x Pint-and-a-half widemouth
or:  24x 1/2 pint (TWO CASES)

The cost was around the $75 mark via local sale, but it is a vintage yellow presto.  It is well worth waiting and saving because after about 2 months of using a smaller model, you will have wasted more than the difference in electricity.  I never EVER use everything out of it at once and at times some stuff sits for months.  Out of the PC and into a storage box.  I run mixed bag sessions.  Part is agar, part is a jar with foil squares, a jar with a few qtips etc.  When you look at it from that perspective, you realize how efficient having that space is.  I call it my "Jr. Science Lab".

Also this:

A single grain quart mini-mono MS can 3-flush over an oz easily.

The best way to recommend a size is to outline the pitfalls of the smaller vs the larger, but that the smaller will use a bit less electric.  Smaller ones have less water in them.....However you approach this hobby there is a cooker that is sized just right!

Id never go below a 16qt.

There are so many uses for a PC in this hobby that having a large one is an investment in the future education.

Lol thank you everyone for the advice and just to settle some arguments from above. Right now my set-up has 6lbs of pre sterilized rye colonizing.
So that 8qt WOULD have been a down grade yes, but as I said I was mostly looking for a quick way to get started with agar.

I found someone willing to make a deal for a 23qt so I lucked out and am able to get that.
