Problems with Out-Grow's SFDs

So I got some SFDs from Out-Grow recently. Went to use them and noticed that they're so thick it's completely impossible to use them whole with the lid upside down. So I emailed and was told they're meant to be used with the lid rubber side down, or as a replacement for the lid. I'm not willing to use it as a lid itself, so I figured I'd try it with rubber side down.
Now I'm trying my 3rd run, and it's ridiculously hard to get some bands to turn all the way down. I'm using lid-SFD-band setup.
Any ideas? I just did a run, and 3 of my filters just popped off in the PC. I cranked each band down as hard as I could.
I've tried the thinner style of SFD (such as from everythingmushrooms) although never whole. I did a TL-style lid with cut-up pieces siliconed on and got terrible contam problems.

I think it goes jar-SFD-lid-band? IDK never used them yet, TL's tek should work fine tho. Maybe try revisiting it?
You might try looking up the lids aloha offers, they use a similar filter.
Is there a response you are looking for because this post looks like it should be in the sponsors forum.
Just trying to be helpful...

i'd just use them without lids. if you foil them well enough they wont leak moisture and provide excellent Gas exchange.

I second that. I've never used them myself so no personal experience, but I've seen a lot of good people on here use them as a lid with good results.
seems like you suggested to use them whole too, I think most people use them sans lid when they're whole though. Some people cut 4 holes in the lid and use lid+SFD (like you and RR do) but if it's a problem maybe try it the other way.

If you're going with SFD's, either get plastic lids or use them whole. Metal lids rust out, and then you have to buy more SFDs, which aren't cheap. If you use them whole, you can just replace the lid and keep using the filter pretty much forever. I'm in this situation myself right now, and I'm gonna have to buy about 100 new SFDs.
I agree to use the whole filter disk without cutting, but you certainly don't have to replace metal lids when they rust, nor do you replace the filter disks when they get rust stains on them. Some of my filter disks are disgustingly stained, including rust stains, but still work perfectly. Simply wipe rusty lids and rings with a green scouring pad and keep using.
Plastic lids tend to break easily, and I've also had several pop off when shaking jars, spilling grains all over the place. In addition, you'll get better gas exchange by having a few small holes in the lid, but using the entire surface of the filter disk rather than a small section, which I think is what you said. I just wanted to clarify that. RR

The lid is always supposed to go under the filter. Otherwise moisture can transfer through the filter. Most people do not replace the lid with a SFD, and when they do they have problems with grains drying out and stalling.
I'm not revisiting TL's TEK. I've tried it through and through. It works for most but I'm working in extreme conditions.
