Your opinion on therapists
    #19266255 - 12/12/13 03:01 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Do share your opinion of therapists/psychologists as well as your experiences if you'd like.

You probably won't care too much about what's below the line, but I just typed it for the fuck of it.
---------------
My experience with the one psychologist I've been to and remember was actually pretty good. He was a cool guy, very understanding, and quite easy to connect to as a person, so essentially he was great at his job lol. Nothing else to really say about that for the most part except other than to mention the time when my parents thought I was addicted to weed over the summer which they relayed to said psychologist. In that time I was smoking just about everyday with my friend, so that's understandable. It blew over quite well as I told him the truth and how I only smoked so much because it's fun and since it was summer, I also made the point that I was not physically/mentally addicted. It all blew over pretty well. I now don't smoke it very often at all, just on the weekends mostly because being sober a lot is good for you and getting high isn't really important.

My experiences with therapists were pretty terrible. I've been diagnosed with a couple things from routine visits that lasted around 4 months. I'd probably go once every two weeks, and was "diagnosed" with clinical depression and relatively high add. Although this all happened in a period of time in my life that any 11 year old kid would've been depressed in. Prescribed Prozac (15mg or 10mg can't remember) and adderall 15mg. I can't exactly recall what effect the Prozac had on me but I do remember my behavior was pretty eradic. Such as yelling at classmates and a lot of depersonalization really. I remember starting and stopping taking it a lot which I've now learned isn't very good lol
I can say I'm certainly not depressed in the most common way, ex. being sad/feeling hopeless most of the time ect. but as for any other type, it's anyone's guess. Obviously I believe that I am not because 1) I don't know too much about other types and 2) I'd like to think we create our own state of mind (disregarding serious mental disorders).
Regardless if I am or not, I fucking love life and all the other people living it. I find great pleasure in plenty of activities and I just simply feel the best I've ever felt in my life right now. Probably due to all the recent realizations I've had about life. Some epiphanies with the help of psychedelics, others while sober. I've found life and being alive is something to be appreciated, which is a thought that didn't have as much as of an impact on me in the past than it does now.

Sure typing all this wasn't necessary but writing on amphs is fuckin fun.

I've been to a few therapist. They are ok if you go in with the thought of opening up and wanting to solve issues. If you go there without the will the work on yourself, it's gonna be useless.

I've only had one therapist that was worth a damn.  She focused on behavior modification and was willing to work with me when I flat out refused medication (I'm type 2 bi-polar).  Her insights into my psyche were sharp as a tack and she focused on how to recognize the behaviors I do unconsciously so that I could shape them and choose when they were appropriate or not.  There was no judgment in her analysis, just "is this getting you what you want out of life, and are you aware of how your actions are affecting you?" kind of questions.  There was never any thought of staying in therapy long term, just about giving me the tools I needed to succeed and get what I wanted out of therapy and then moving me out the door.

The absolute worst are the idiots that won't listen to a word you say, prescribe some shit medication and push you out the door, then only talk to you to see if the medication is working, and if not, they switch the meds up or change the dose.  Those people always only made things worse and nearly killed me with the side effects of all the shit they were pushing on me and the quick changes in medication.  The second worse kind is the judgmental type that try to push their morality on you and shame you for behaviors you think are fine (drug use or sexuality, what have you) or the coddling "tell me your feelings" talk therapists that function like you're paying someone to pretend to be your friend and listen to you whinge on about how unfair life is.

In the end, a good therapist gives you the tools to be a functional human being that doesn't need drugs or a therapist, in all likelihood if you have half a brain you could get the same result by reading good literature, philosophy and a few self-help books.  Good luck.

I have been fortunate.  I went to therapy for eight years and worked with one psychologist who was just outstanding.  Helped me cope with a lot of issues and now I am better (in my opinion) than I was by a long shot.  You can be miserable, but you don't have to stay that way.  Getting it off your chest is the first step in dealing with it all.

Very true, and that pertains to most of all things in life as well.
I know I certainly did go in with that mind set because I truly wanted help. Although the one thing I wanted help with was the one thing that he couldn't solve. Thankfully that chapter of my life has long passed and I've learned much from it.

They are hired wise friends.  Usually.  Sometimes they aren't all that wise.  Sometimes they are fucking fruitcakes.

They're trained that if drugs are in the picture, that's the biggest problem.

I find that they've been invaluable in escaping self-defeating thought patterns, perspectives, and habits though. Just DONT BE AFRAID TO SWITCH if one's not working out; one not working out doesn't mean that therapists won't work for you, just like not getting along with one person doesn't mean that friends won't happen for you lol.

When I was younger I was sent to da. She smoked pot, so it was pretty weird. She didn't help. I'm the only one who will ever be able to help, and until I feel like it I'll just sit contentedly.

Also I have to say that I am glad I didn't continue looking and seeing therapists even if they would've helped me figure things out faster. I don't like the whole idea of me having depression obviously and I feel as though if I did continue to see them, I would've started to believe that I was indeed depressed and who knows where my mind would have been at this point.
Although that thought is based solely off my biased opinion and those who feel as though their therapist is helping, should definitely keep seeing them.

I've been to a handful of sessions and thought they were useful.  They ask the right types of questions and help to process.

I've also helped administer psychotherapy a bit.  Thought that was pretty interesting as well.
