If you've ever looked for a room to rent on craigslist, how many people did you email before someone emailed you back?
I've emailed 15 people and nobody has messaged me back. I have no clue why.

People are lazy and don't log back in. Recent postings almost always = better and go for phone numbers if possible.
HOWEVER, an even better approach is to contact a leasing agent for the apartment complex you're looking at listings for, as they'll often have lists of available units or tenants looking to sublease.
Good luck... I'll be back in this game too soon.

email is not a good way to get in contact w ppl on craigslist..didn't they provide phone numbers??
i've been most successful in apartment hunting when i go drive around an area i'd like to live in jotting down numbers off of 'for rent' signs.

Don't forget the MLS listings in your area. They have it all I think. We found a great house using MLS.

It's because posting items on CL is time-consuming and a pain in the ass.
The second you post something, you'll get spammed with a bunch of garbage. Then you'll get another 10 emails from people haggling you, trying to get whatever it is you've listed for 80% less than what you asked.
Then when you do work something out people change their mind, or back out, or just never show. Then once you try and contact the previous buyers, they'll say they'll "get back to you" since they've moved on to other sellers.
To help, I'd abide by the following CL rules: 1. As someone else said, if there is a number, call. 2. Be ready move on an item//place. Don't tell them you'll come see the place in three days, or on the weekend, etc. Tell them you'll be there TODAY, with a check and ready to put a deposit down.

I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did. Smith, P. Bull. Use kijiji for looking for apartments and jobs, I find it's a much better place then Craigslist. I've had better luck is what I mean.

Well I have a room mate i'm with currently, I met him last October at a party in Michigan. I didn't know that he knew my sister by association from her years in band. We had a falling out a week ago and he no longer is my room mate any longer.
Awesome. Just me and we can talk about it.
and to everyone else, most of the people on craigslist don't leave a phone number and I only found houses for sale on mls

I'm not even in the city that I plan on moving to. but this is great advice for when I take the trip there.

and I'll probably end up trying this. I want to be around artsy/college-aged/420 friendly kids and I feel like it would be a toss-up going to a leasing agent. Also, don't they tack on fees?

In Houston the MLS system lists houses for sale, houses for rent and apartments for rent or sale. Sorry the one where you live is sucking ass.

and on kijiji, I'd assume that people would tend to reply to my emails since there's gotta be less spammers but there are only ~12 listings for the entire city I want to move to. and none are either within my price range or close to the school I plan on attending.
but I'll check it periodically though.

Craigslist has been good in most cities I've lived but you do need to develop the keen eye to filter out phishing posts.
Keep in mind people on the other side get inundated with replys ( many of them bullshit phishing emails too). I draft up a template explaining my needs and personality and just paste it into my email so I can bang out a shitload of info requests without spending time typing them all out. Prepare to search for 2-3 months unless you are ok with settling for a less than ideal situation if one surfaces.
