Still Air Box Sterile Technique

I used to wipe down the Still Air Box (SAB) with Isopropanol, close it, then spray and wipe everything that will go into the SAB (Grain jars for G2G, a long narrow spoon, soak few paper towels, then lastly wipe the spray-bottle of alcohol). I would then spray all the sides, and mostly everything in the SAB the spray could reach (the concept in this was to spray the air and hopefully make airborne spores fall and stick to the alcohol on the bottom or sides). Then wait a minute or two.
After all that, I would go in the SAB as delicately as possible with gloved hands and a clean long-sleeve shirt.
It worked all right usually, but the amount of alcohol fumes around the place was pretty toxic.
Then I read about how people use soapy water on the sides and bottom of the SAB to have the contaminants stick. So I tried this. but with the un-flat bottom, not all the bottom would be covered.
I also read about how people will pour the spawn into new grain jars, but that involves holding a jar directly over the receiving jar, and it's hard to smoothly get enough spawn out, especially when the spawn jar is getting low towards the end. Now I don't think this works well for a 13" tall SAB.
This gave me a lot of Trichoderm, yay!
Reading around, I think people do it a lot of different ways. For me, what I learned is that I don't like pouring spawn into grain jars in a SAB with a low ceiling (its not that small of a SAB,though, its 105 quarts)
Also, I spray a clean long-sleeve shirt with alcohol before working, and use gloves and a medical mask. Would Tyvek sleeves be much better? I plan on doing many more transfers and Agar.
Obviously the most important thing is to keep the air still in the box, but what do you all choose to do?

Recently I've seen people around here saying they dont even wipe the sides down or spray...they just keep the air super still.
Personally I wear tyvek sleeves, got a few pairs for when I sterilize grain in grow bags...and they're reuseable! I also made a stop at wally world and picked up some surgical masks for cheap, helps and bacterial air coming out of your mouth from moving whats in your SAB while you work. I also just use soapy water on the walls of my tub and bottom, just not the lid, I wipe down with alcohol and place a few soaked alcohol towels on my jars to wipe them down with before doing my G2Gs or inoculations.
But that's just me, to keep my OCD with being clean/sterile as possible and so far I havent had any kind of contaminations in 4 months of growin until a few flushes in with my cakes :P

I just lysol the bitch out, then wipe down. Alcohol doesn't do anything to mold or mold spores. Lysol does kill some molds. I always wear a mask when doing it so Im not breathing that shit.

bodhisatta said: Some people find it easier to take the lid off and use the SAB upside down IE the opening of the box is the floor. This way you can use a completely smooth flat surface such as a table(sanitize first) or a bleach soaked towel(if you want a less slippery surface).
Save the lid though I use my SAB as storage when I'm not using it.
I personally use a coffee table. I wipe it with alcohol put the SAB over it. I spray the inside of my SAB with a very very dilute hot water and dish soap mix(like a half a drop) then I plug the holes and let it sit for a good 10 minutes( with the things I want to work with already inside )
It's good practice to flame outside of the box rather than having a flame inside(it will stir up the air )
It's also a good idea to do some practice runs without using a culture just to get familiar with how to "drive your SAB" I found out the SAB moved around so I put some bricks around my SAB so it stays put when my arms hit the side of the arm holes.
Lysol is garbage for a SAB, 70% iso alcohol is good for the table if you don't want to use the lid as a floor.

My SAB is upside-down on a towel.
I wipe jars with 70% iso and use diluted Dr. Bronner's Almond Scented Magic Soap in a spray-bottle for the inside of the SAB. Contaminants will stick to wet surfaces. I find soapy water works best. Bleach irritates my nose and lungs. Alcohol dries fast and is flammable.

bleach is only good for inviting rust to anything metal inside of your SAB.
TL uses it, but I am not having any problems using soap water, so I'll save myself from the harshness of bleach for now.

It works. I use a lot of iso, too. Anything in my SAB is only in there for a maximum of 12 minutes, so rust isn't an issue. You get more rust from PCing your jars for 120 minutes than you would by using bleach in your SAB.

Make a 2% solution. I like Dr Bronners peppermint. There is a reason this will appear above the OP on older posts.
