Cow dung dwelling shrooms
    #1926323 - 09/17/03 07:05 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Has anyone found mushrooms with rust colored spores growing from cow dung? The specimens I picked were about 5-15mm tall and the caps were about 15mm in diameter. White to reddish caps with white stems. Small, yes but I have never seen them before and they may be worth cultivating.
      Thanks

Conocybe species grow in Manure but they have cinnamon colored caps and orange-cinnamon colored gills and spores.

Red caps does not soulnd probably ever.

Unless they are a chestnut-ochracious solor of some Panaeolus which also llook reddish brown.

those ar ethe only ones in manure which come close. What you desceribe is hard to picture.

I agree with mj.

The rusty brown spores suggest Conocybe, or possibly Bolbitius. Definitely not active, very possibly very poisonous. And red is a surprising color for the cap.

Happy mushrooming!

Yes, these mushrooms are very puzzling. I can't find them in any of my identification books. Some of them produce spore prints, but some dont.

In order for mushrooms to fruit on manure, do the spores have to be ingested by the animal?

I live in the Black Hills of South Dakota. There are hundreds of cow pastures in this area and I have found dozens of different dung mushrooms. Strangely, I have only been able to identify one species. Is there anybody who has this same problem? It's really demotivating to spend an entire day picking shrooms and not knowing what the hell they are....
