no lime or buffer to 50/50 peat verm casing
    #19263006 - 12/11/13 09:44 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

hi again:
I have 3 lg trays that need to be cased (like yesterday)...(longer really), which I did today, however I didn't have any lime. I did soak rye in gypsum and added more gypsum to substrate of coir verm for PH stabilizer. I have never cased w/ peat and didn't realize it was so acidic.  Can I sprinkle lime tomorrow or will the gypsum help? I can't afford to loose these trays because I screwed up the PH. What would you recommend? Thanks for all the help and knowledge everyone here so freely shares. It is much appreciated:)

I'm just throwing ideas out here, and can't say I've tried either of these, but lye will bring down the pH as well, and if you can't find lye you can always use the white wood ash left over in a fire pit (but not in a grill after burning charcoal briquettes, which usually have a clay binder).

I personally have used Violet's favorite casing material, black potting soil sifted through a sieve and then pasteurized.  She does it in the microwave by boiling it twice, with a day in between, but a properly pasteurized dirt casing will work just great.
