Alternatives to geolite?
    #1926292 - 09/17/03 08:53 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Alright... there is no geolite/expanded clay/hydroton/leca to be found in my area. The person is trying to set up a poor man's pod...

Would pea gravel... (Small, smooth stones) be a sufficient alternative? There is an excellent source of this nearby... seems like it would hold a decent amount of water and allow bubble curtain to bubble up through quite nicely... Or perhaps lava-rocks? I saw those somewhere while out looking for geolite.

Or do you folks just recommend perlite? this to me though seems like it wouldn't allow a bubble curtain to bubble up through very nicely and be very contam prone. I am thinking pea gravel cause it looks so nice and non-messy and natural... The big question is what else would work in magash's pod? i am really trying to avoid pearlite.

Be careful with lava rock the pourous spaces are large enough for any bacteria to live in. Make sure you sterilize extremely well.

Lava Rock. 3.50 including tax at your local Lowe's or Wal Mart. It was quite enough to fill the bottom of 2 terarriums for Rough the wonderdog. Rinse it first, then boil.
