Seattle closes in on fines for public pot smoking

SEATTLE -- It's never been legal, but getting caught smoking pot in public could soon cost you in Seattle.
A city council committee approved a plan to create a citation structure for people caught toking-up in public view. A first offense will result in a warning. A second offense allows Seattle Police to issue a $27 fine. Councilmember Nick Licata says it will give clear guidance to officers.
"I think they'll feel a little more confident of what the boundaries are that they will have to enforce," Licata said.
When voters approved the legalization of marijuana for adults last year, the law included a restriction on public consumption. Puffing up in city parks rubs plenty of people the wrong way, especially when they see officers nearby doing little or nothing to stop it. Liban Warsame sometimes smokes at Steinbrueck Park near Pike Place Market, and says he rarely gets hassled.
"Many officers see me smoking weed," Warsame said. "I'm a respectful young guy so when they see me smoke weed they are like 'OK, go a couple feet away from the public.' And I do."
Seattle Police agree they had a hands-off approach.
"For 2013, what you saw a lot of was public education for marijuana legalization. Enforcement was not what we were focusing on," said Det. Sgt. Sean Whitcomb.
This proposed ordinance signals that the pot-smoking grace period may have finally come to an end.
"We're not afraid to cite," Whitcomb said. "And with this ordinance, I think people should look for more enforcement."
City Attorney Pete Holmes says the proposal sets clear consequences for violators, but accommodations must still be made people who live in buildings where smoking is banned and for the homeless.
"It's really hard to tell someone you can't enjoy a right enjoyed by others simply because you don't own a home," Holmes said.
The proposal now goes to the full city council on Monday for final approval.

I love how cheap fines in the US are I got a ticket for $25 for doing 23 miles over the limit in Montana and I almost laughed in the pigs face when he told me how much. Here I would probably have had a fine in the $350-$400 range and maybe lost my licence.

Definitely and you have to remember it's legal in Washington so that is reason it's such a small fine is because the majority of people in Washington support the cannabis movement and THAT warms my heart that they said "fuck high fees for cannabis users".
It's time to take back our freedom of use of medical/recreational cannabis & Industrial hemp that alone could generate MASS national trading system and SEVERELY gain jobs and economic boom, create jobs and hundreds of newly discovered .
It almost makes me want to move there but home is where the heart is.

My last speeding ticket was 38 in a 35 and it was 150 bucks....
and I gotta add that I've smoked copious amounts of weed in and around Seattle back in my college days nobody cared at all

Yeah Seattles awesome. No one cares here. I smoked in seattle all the time growing up and no one gives a fuck. You can be down at the beach, or in the middle of the city - wherever! haha
Also, I like how if they catch you - first time it's a warning - then it's a $27 fine.

Where I live weed is so low on the totem pole that one time I got busted by a cop rolling a spliff in my car. He comes up to the window right as I'm putting the filter in and says "finish rolling that then give it to me". So I finish, give it to him, he takes off and I roll up another
Now that the ball is moving in the U.S. maybe we can finally legalize it up here without ya yanks threatening to close the borders n shit

Our fines are a bit lower, but just wanted to note that stretches of Montana highway didn't used to have a speed limit that they actually enforced. The federal government put pressure on the state government to enforce speed violations so now they hand out tickets, but they aren't big ones. In other states 23 miles over would've been a couple hundred bucks and you might get it lowered down if you have a decent driving record. Get enough of those though and you'll lose your license. It's I think 30 miles over the posted speed limit to even be a serious enough offense to possibly lose your license without many previous violations.
edit: On the news about Seattle... No officer, please don't warn me and then slap my wrist on the second offense!

I'd be shocked if he didn't I learned a long time ago that cops in this hood are usually just looking to shake you down so just give them some drugs and they are on their way.

Incredible. haha. I wonder if there are any cops who are active members not trying to make a bust on Shroomery. Sounds like your neighborhood may have a couple

Yeah, Montana's pretty lax with the speed limit enforcement. There used to not be speed limits on their highways.
Good to see that Seattle doesn't want to be too much of a hassle to its resident pot smokers.

surely you jest....? That's retarded. My last (and actually, first) ticket was down in DE in Dover on the day of a big nascar race. I forget how fast I was going, probably 10-15 over, but there was a cop in an SUV in the median like jutting out into my side of the highway (DE has those retarded left turning lanes in the middle of the fucking highway) so I got over a lane, but didn't use my blinker because, well, I guess I just didn't... sure enough he got me for that, and speeding. lame.
on topic, this is incredible. I'd pay $27 just for the privilege of smoking in public without being harassed or arrested here. you can get away with smoking in public in NJ quite easily if you know what you're doing...but it's still a risk.

Exactly, and even if the cops catch you red handed most of them don't care. Back on 4/20 a few years ago me and my buddies got caught hotboxing near Alki Beach...the cops just talked to us till they felt we were sober enough to drive away and that was it. They took a dub that was sitting on the dashboard but they didn't search the car or anything

I shit you not. I went to court and got it knocked down to 700. Big freakin deal. It set me back a few months financially, it was basically the police stealing from me as I couldnt get over to another lane due to traffic. It was just criminal, but the best way out is to pay the fucking fine and stay the fuck out of the system and as far away from police as possible. Gotta love living in Georgia.

That's unfortunate man, sorry to hear that. My ticket was just a fine, no formal court date, no lisence points or anything. I have a Gold PBA Family member card that has gotten me out of every bit of trouble in NJ... gave in to the cop in DE and he just goes "What the hell is this?" apparently they don't work across state lines
