mycelial growth stopped when it hit casing

I cased some straw with coir colonized w/ hawks "super strain". When it hit the coir, ph of about eight, it totaly stopped there. The coir was about at max moisture content when I applied it and the ph might have been a little high but would that be enough to stop growth? What can I do to fix the problem next time?

How long has it been since you cased it?

You don't want the layer to wet. Wet enough so that when you squeeze a handfull, a little bit of water drops out. It could have stopped if this layer had max moisture.
