Dual probe wire less thermometer! For pasteurization.
    #19260816 - 12/11/13 03:21 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Thought a few of you may find this interesting, also convenient. May be a good present with Christmas right around the corner. Says it's wire less up to 300 feet. I know I want one I hate checking the water and sub every 10-20 minutes.

80$

Now that I know how my pasteurization technique works I rarely use a thermometer. Ever few times I'll check it but it's always what I'm expecting after finding out how my setup worked. It's probably less fluctuating with glass jars than bags from the thermal mass of the glass itself though

alternatively they sell thermometers that beep or have an alarm when a temperature you set is reached.

May be cheaper than 80$

These would be nice if I got it for free though

I paid 15 for mine at wally, even though it has a cord, I can just set it to go off at a certain temp usually start at 80-85 and keep my stove on medium til the core hits 105, turn off the heat and set the thing to 140, once it goes off again I just set the timer for an hour and it works out great for me! Pretty set and forget

I use my tap water, Coming out at 150F usually and brewing gloves. I have my coir chopped up already. A knife will go into the side of coir and layers will flake off, no need to saw anything. I pour the water into my coir and verm and mix. Load into jars. It's about 100-110F once in the jars. I put it into a preheated water bath(with the burner off now) with the water at 180F the jars come up to 140F within 15-30M the water bath is usually around 160 by then so my jars cant go over 160 if they wanted to. This will hold temperature for over an hour above 140F.
