Question about preparing the cakes
    #19258104 - 12/10/13 10:55 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

As some of you know, I am doing my first grow and I came up with a question.

Last week, 3-4 out of 12 jars were fully colonized, so I waited one more week for consolidation. Now it is the 5th week that the mycelium has been colonizing in the jars. I checked them today and about 8 of the jars are fully colonized, but there are still 4 of them that do not have 100% mycelium (just a small area is not white.)

I do not want to rush things, I am patient, so I do not mind waiting an extra week for those jars that are a bit behind to fully colonize and to consolidate. But how about the ones that have been already fully colonized for a week? Should I make cakes with those or is it safe to leave them in the jars? I was hopping to do all 12 jars in one shot.

Thanks!

After giving the fully colonized jars a week for consolidation, I would fruit them as they come.  I've had a couple jars take REAL long like over a month long to get close to 100% before I birthed em and washed off the uncolonized sections.

You could put the jars into the fridge, and wait to have them all ready. Are you in a hurry?

I am not in a hurry, quite the contrary... but the ones that are fully colonized and already consolidated for a week, are they safe? That is my concern. Like if the mycelium tries to keep growing and has no more room to go (due the jar being full?) Sorry for my noob question

Dude, are you tripping? :mushroom2: :mushroom2: I just have jars and mycelium colonizing / consolidating... dunk and roll comes next and then, the pins, lol.

The fridge will slow the growth down so much, it'll pretty much be stopped.

extra consolidation is great, the more the myc has a chance to digest it the better your flushes will be

Some people wait for invitro pinning before fruiting, i do when i do brf, only cause they are pretty

Fridge is unnecessary.
The extra wait is fine.
Cakes have and will pin inside the jar if left alone. Its called invitro pinning.

If a cake pins invitro before full consolidation/colonization, it can mean signs of a contam present in the jar.

I held onto colonized jars for 14 days. Fruiting perfectly right now as I type haha

Awesome! More wait time it is then

I am happy to wait longer for better flushes... that is the goal after all

Thanks for the tips folks! :mushroom2:

By no means is there a correlation between longer consolidation and better flushes.

Consolidation is the phase where the mycelium consumes part or most of the substrate after colonizing it.  It will substantially increase the quality and quantity of the future harvests.

Mutant 'blobs' with all stem material and no cap are caused by oversupplementation or failure to allow the mycelium sufficient time to consolidate the substrate.  The traditional 'mutant' with a second cap and stem rising out of the first mushroom is genetic.

Actually, ANY substrate will benefit from consolidation.  It's a well known and followed practice.  Let the mycelium digest some of the food available, and then introduce to fruiting.  This results in more of your final product being produced during first and second flush, so you can dump the tray and replace it with a fresh one, making best use of fruiting area real estate.

It isn't really necessary to wait for primordia to birth, but the idea is to give about a week after full colonization for the mycelium to digest some of the food it has just colonized. We call this process 'consolidation' and it makes for a much better pinset. Consolidation allows the mycelium to perform this process while still in the jars so they don't dry out before the flush. Those who birth right at full colonization often end up with dry cakes by the time they flush, which reduces yields.

I also use fine verm, and it works fine. In fact, it holds a bit more water than course verm, and the mycelium seems to colonize it just fine. It's also better for use as the contaminant barrier on top.

Your cake is bluing a bit so it's too dry. You can pour some water directly onto the bowl shaped divot in the top of the cake that was formed by the shape of the jar. It will take a few hours to soak in, then you can repeat the process, and this should help to hydrate your cake to get it through this flush. Good luck.
