Looks possible but the thorns make me think of something else

Pic of flowers? Or seed pods?  How big is it?
Can split the bark and see what color it is inside?

If I was to guess... Sounds like a Acacia farnesiana

Looks pretty much identical to the mimosa I had growing in my old backyard, minus the thorns. I don't remember mine having thorns.

This actually looks like it might be M. hostilis, AIRDOG, but there's no way to confirm without seeds/pods/flowers. Maybe you can dig up a piece of root to check for the tell-tale coloration in the root bark, but I'm not sure if that is unique to M. hostilis.

Have you been able to look under the bark for color?
