I mined bitcoins for two years on this,

Thats a combination of 5850s and 5830s. Its not profitable anymore, so I mine litecoins on it now. I have also moved half of it into the house for heat.

No, not really. I just trade them for bitcoins on the exchange. Then I sell the bitcoins like I normally do, on craigslist or buy gold/silver with them. But I havent been doing that lately, I have been saving my litecoins which is awesome because they have outperformed bitcoins latley.

DieCommie - how many LTC can you mine in 24 hours with current difficulty with 3 video cards running at about 1800KH/s-2100KH/s?

Is this like a HYIP, which matures after a certain date?

No, its nothing like that. BitCoin is not an investment, there is no dividend or return. If you buy one or mine one you just own one until you sell it.

I don't have any strong convictions about trading in a virtual world.
I see it as an arbitrary medium of exchange.
Do I understand, correctly, that you are buying it at a lower price, and selling it a higher price?
Also, time is not a factor, then?
Thanks for your patience.

No, I mine them. I haven't bought a BitCoin in years. I make them for the cost of my time, computer hardware and electricity and then I sell them. I have speculated a bit when the price is volatile, but like all speculation that is besides the "purpose" of the commodity/currency.
There are lots of speculators right now because the price has gone up. When the price goes back down and the excitement fades it will be back to business as usual; some people mining coins for profit, some people selling stuff for coins and some people buying stuff for coins.

To mine bitcoins? You just run some software on your computer. Of course if you actually want to make money doing it you have to carefully design your computer hardware setup and spend a bit of time tweaking the software settings to make it work.

This reminds me of the scientific projects, to which many people contributed bandwidth, while they were not using their computer.

Yes, it is like that. I used to do SETI at home as well as folding at home back in the day. It was natural for me to get into bitcoin mining.
A common complaint is why cant bitcoin mining solve a "useful" algorithm like the ones SETI@home and Folding@home do? The answer is simple, those algorithms do not have well defined difficulties. That is, we both don't know the solution to the algorithm AND we dont know how difficult it is to find a solution. With the bitcoin algorithm we don't know the solution but we DO know the difficulty. The difficulty is well defined which allows the bitcoin network to dynamically readjust the difficulty in response to more or less people mining. The difficulty adjusts in response to miners such that a solution is found once every ten minutes, on average (no matter how many or how little people are mining). This necessary component of the bitcoin network could not be had by doing SETI or Folding type work.

I am mining Primecoins with DigitalOcean. I get 1.5 XPM/day and I spend 40$/month. Nothing huge but I had some fun doing it.

I've been mining LTC with (R9 280X) GPU's. I get around 760 (+/-) Kh/sec per GPU. No need to heat my home either.

That correctly describes all currencies that have ever existed. As markets grow, they become more stable - but volatility is essential for people who want to profit by trading.
