Measuring big bricks of Coir + Verm (by volume?) and Question on Trash Bag Liners for tubs

A lot of recipes for Coir & Verm use 1 brick of coir.
When using an extra-large brick (about 6 times as big as a regular brick), it has to be broken up before-hand, and is hard to measure.
What do people do when pasteurizing a portion of the brick to get the right ratios? Weighing the coir would make sense, but what if there is no scale to use?
Also, what advantages are there to using a garbage bag holding the substrate to reduce side-pins when compared to taping the outside of the tub? As I understand it, the garbage bag shrinks with the substrate, but it doesnt seem like it will totally adhere to it. It seems messy, and not re-usable... I won't ever be convinced that taping the tub does nothing to prevent side pins; I know it makes a big difference

1 - use a scale. It always varies in how compressed it is. No way around it.
2 - a liner works better because it prevents FAE from hitting the sides. Tape doesn't work well because light isn't a big pinning trigger.

its always a good idea to lift your bin to feel the weight of it. if it starts to feel light or you see signs of bluing in the mycelium its time for a dunk.
If you don't have a scale then you'll have to hydrate little by little, filling quart jars as you do.

Yes, the garbage bag does shrink with the substrate to an extent.

And yes, I know it may not seem like the garbage bag would adhere to the substrate, but it does... it just works the other way around. It's not the garbage bag adhering to the substrate, it's the colonizing mycelia that adhere to the bag.

Messy, not at all. Not reuseable, if you're into the green movement, I understand.... no, I would no suggest reusing the trash bag used for liner.

Considering that light isn't a pinning trigger... what convincing do you need?
I'm gonna have to disagree with you, based on personal experience.
I use garbage bag liners, have from day 1. A friend of mine also growing was going out of town and asked me to take care of her tubs for a couple weeks. She taped the outside of her tubs with the standard silver duct tape, like you mention, in an effort to stop side pins she said. Well, she ended up with as many side pins as I do when I occasionally forget to use a liner. I explained to her that it's not the light that's making your mushrooms grow on the side, it's the ideal environment because of the humidity at the surface, the FAE, and the evaporation off the substrate... AND the mushrooms will grow entirely without light just to prove that.
When the mycelia adhere to the liner, it is no longer a viable ground for fruit to grow because there is no exchange of fresh air...
without the fresh air exchange, there is no evaporation and without evaporation there is no humidity at the surface. no pinning triggers = no pins
