People Who Don't Drink Alcohol Are More Likely To Die Young

http://www.businessinsider.com/abstaining-from-alcohol-significantly-shortens-life-2013-12
Sort of a deceiving article, as the possible explanation stated for this is that, "alcohol can be a great social lubricant, and strong social networks are essential for maintaining mental and physical health." According to that, its not the alcohol itself that makes you live longer but the effect is has on your networking which benefits you in the long run. I don't know, figured I'd be worth posting. I rarely ever drink alcohol, maybe once a month if that

Excellent. I knew eventually that my 7 year daily drinking run would pay off eventually.

I have a feeling this article gives a lot of people that idea. I'm actually starting to think I should drink a bit, I'm never gonna be a big drinker but I've wanted to get into wine tasting for a while

I'd argue that the number of people who die of liver cancer and or failure due to alcohol abuse would outweigh any extra longevity that social drinkers may benefit from.

How do they define heavy? If we are comparing the portion of the population that doesn't drink, those people are all outliers. People who refuse to ever touch alcohol are not really normal people. It is the personality type that makes them non drinkers - not the other way around.

Drinking a beer a day is healthier though
most peoples diets conform to one set of standards that drinking would aid

Its one of those bogus studies heavy users produce to feel better about themselves.
Many people who dont drink, do so because their poor health doesnt let them.
Generally the people who dont give a fuck are the healthy ones and the meticulous ones are the people who got numerous signals from their body that they cant do this, not too much of that, etc.
If I drink a few glasses my heart starts skipping beats and hurting. This greatly upsets me, having had a heart attack and being on a bunch of cardiac drugs, so I practically never drink multiple glasses. The average guy who drinks five isnt healthier because he drinks five but because he doesnt have the underlying heart conditrion that causes my temperance.

When I think of people "dying young," I thing of people dying in their teens and 20's from car accidents and similar stuff. The article says the study was on people 55-65 over a 20 year span, so it sounds like the people I'd think of as "dying young" were not covered in the study at all.

Drinking a beer isn't exactly drinking heck if you drank a beer with every meal that would be three
however a lot of people are in hospitals right now because of diabetes and I could easily see that being more of a problem and smoking
the ages these people are at are more likely the time when the abuse they did on their body comes into effect and I wouldn't say that's limited to just alcohol

Maybe he recognizes alcohol doesn't do anything for you. You're being defensive so that tells me you like it as a crutch.
It's ok we can cry together.
Alcohol isn't a social lubricant. That's politically correct shit. Alcohol releases your inhabitions by making you selfish.
I've recently discovered, after a long break from booze, that the odd drink is best. I feel about booze the same way some people see weed, you need breaks to appreciate it's qualities. Having these beers the other night it kind of reminded me of rue and here's why.
Syrian rue doesn't tolerate, but it does. The hallucinagenic properties tolerate, but not the maoi effect. Booze is like that. If you don't take regular breaks of psychedelic comparison, the magic isn't there, only the shit end of the stick. Somehow, people seem to like this.

that's not what they were studying.
If you read the article, it does not appear that they were excluding accidental deaths:
Quote:
Despite the increased risks for cirrhosis and several types of cancer, not to mention dependency, accidents, and poor judgment associated with heavy drinking, those who imbibe are less likely to die than people who stay dry.
They were, however, excluding actual young people.
