What would you do if you were 18 again?
#19258158 - 12/10/13 11:12 PM (10 years, 1 month ago) |
|
|
Seems like a pointless question but It would help me get some insight on what I should be doing with my life. I have so much I want to do but I keep putting it off or avoiding the commitment. I don't know what I really want to do with my time so it gets filled up with pointless internet browsing and video games.
I'm wasting time.
For older shroomerites, what do you wish you had done when you were younger? I'm trying to gain some perspective.

That's how I look at a lot of the things that have happened in my life so far. We can't change the past but you can certainly learn from it. There are many things I know I could have done that would've made better me off than I am.
Everyone says they wish they knew some vital information when they were younger. I'm trying to get that information early. I'm cheating.

Here's a huge one, a really, really, big one.
Remember that advice, that old saying, choose your friends wisely?
Take that advice! Meet some people, see who they are, and if they're not like you or you have even minor doubts, find some others. Be picky. Not extremely picky, but picky.
Find nice friends. Don't get involved with dumbasses... You'll regret all those good times you could have had with people who are more like you.
Also, don't get swept up with the culture. The culture is a con game. It gets you nowhere, I mean, just take a look at it. If you're a free and independent individual, everyone in the culture seems to have a life that is a complete lie. And the irony is that most people join the culture so their lives won't be a lie, or they won't be left with nothing. I cringe when I see it in action. They seem like total morons. Just think of what it does to you when you sell yourself out for culture, how it feels, how it makes you dumber, less free.
Develop yourself. Worry about your opinion only. See what YOU think, see what interests YOU, see what's funny to YOU. Don't worry about cultural norms and being part of it all. It's a con game, it's a big bus to nowhere.
Also, don't be pretentious. That's another, internal, personal con game. You will be on a treadmill if you pretend to be 'cool' or 'hip' or 'cosmopolitan'. Never do it.
---
btw thinking you'd like some advice to avoid the pitfalls of growing up is pretty typical of an 18 year old.

Extremely typical, I know. Thanks for the advice. I'm really trying to break away from what influence culture has over me. The friends I've had seem to fall in line with this attitude. I still catch myself mimicking people. It's as though I don't have my own personality or I've covered it deeply because I use to hate myself so much.
I spend so much time alone that I'm very aware of myself yet I can't seem to improve this person as much as I want to.

You joined this site when you were 13/14?
I'm not much older than you but lately it's really stuck with me that my environment deeply affects who I am.
So I try to surround myself with art, with kind, optimistic, people who I feel can teach me things, and if I'm in a bad environment, I point my attention to my body, or breath, or whatever diverts my attention to something that isn't harmful. I basically experiment with my concentration and environment. Meditation.
I've noticed small things like a negative internal dialogue when I'm in traffic or at work and I'm putting effort in to shift my thoughts away from that. If I'm in traffic for ~1 hour a day and I'm pissed off or my body is tense or I'm thinking negative things, then I'm basically doing a one hour harmful meditation.
Everyone talks about how one hour of meditation or yoga or exercise or reading dramatically helps them but it's important to cut out those negative thoughts.
I didn't proof-read this or put much thought into making this sound pretty, so if you want me to clarify anything, I will.

I got carded buying cigarettes the other day, so essentially I was 18 again for a brief moment until the cashier read my license and started laughing.
But to the question. First, I would have NOT started smoking cigarettes. Second, I would realize that I was much better looking than I thought, and that I should have fucked a lot more people before I got so old, CVS cashiers would be laughing at me.

IMO there is a few approaches to life for all humans early in life and especially when you hit 18. The first of the popular approaches I see, is to set your goals toward making money/career for people who know what they want early in life but this approach really takes A LOT out of the time you would normally spend doing the things you love or raising a family.
That brings me to the second approach I see and that's furthering your academic knowledge and other schooling either for fun and life experience or a specific field you feel interested in. This option also requires a lot of time, dedication and hard work and can take a lot of time away from the things you love to do, family and friends
Another way to go is get a pretty good job,you can move up the ranks and settle down with a family but IMO that's only rewarding if you are personally ready for it
The next approach is the one I'm personally trying to do right now until I can figure out what I want to have as a career or whatever I want to do in life, is having fun and balancing it out with the very basic responsibilities of being an adult.
For instance I'm turning 20 in march and I'm just about to get my drivers licenses because I was petrified of carrying weed in my car even though I have my license. Becoming an adult is a challenging proposition but I had a deep roll about a month ago and I was struggling with the EXACT same question. During that roll, I stopped thinking about how challenging and different life would be. Then I was starting to think about how one of my best friends is in love with his girl deeply and they're having a baby soon and another best friend of mine is deeply in love with a good chick. It's very rewarding being adult. The way I figure it is , we are young, very young. I don't think 18 is a reasonable age for you to know exactly what you're going to do in life. For me I want to meet a woman, continue exploring one of the least documented frontiers called the psychedelic experience.
Don't feel too much pressure on your self , you can't find out what you want in life until you get in tune with your priorities, things that make you happy and what path you want take.

This question is somewhat pointless to most of the posters - it's the recent past. It's like saying, what would you do if it were November again. 18 - or 19, 20, 30 - that shit is ancient history to me.

HoT, you can't go back in time. You can't undo things that have already happened. You can't expect people to catch on instantly to changes you've made - nor should people accept your word that you have changed. Only your actions and time will convince others you have changed. These things are very incremental, and only when you look back over a longer period will people notice that you are different, and that their opinion of you is different.

Live healthier and have more fun.
When I was 18 I was this frustrated, terrorized bundle of issues, now I'm 41 and much more easygoing mentally but my health fucking sucks, in part due to poor health choices made during those years.

One more thing. I would have listened to one of those apps that make sounds only teenagers can hear.

Fuck antibiotics, I'd be perfectly happy if I never touced them again.
I'm sick right now and I have antibiotics, but I'm not taking them. They're bad for you in many ways.
After my last experience with antibiotics I'm cool, http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19097337
Also, fuck herpes, stay away from dirtys and you'll never need valtrex.

It's because of people like you, who aren't taking their antibiotics properly, that we have MRSA.

When I was 18 I was this frustrated, terrorized bundle of issues, now I'm 41 and much more easygoing mentally but my health fucking sucks, in part due to poor health choices made during those years.
Live healthy and have fun kids!
This was the message I wanted to write but could not articulate .Thanks Wiccan you seem like if yoda did psyces and rc's.
