My child got a hold of my fresh poured petri dishes
    #19257797 - 12/10/13 09:34 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

My child got a hold of my fresh poured Petri dishes and opened 4, I accidentally opened 1 of them. Instead of immediately junking them I decided isolate them and see what was going to happen sorry I did not take pictures before throwing them away. After 3 days all kinds of mold grew on every Petri dish that was exposed open non treated air even the one I accidentally opened for 1 second. I think this it is something every new person  should see and do so they can know first hand how easy it is to get contamination's .

Most of us are aware of how easy it is for nutritious media to contaminate. What's your pouring procedure?

Teaching them the hobby I refuse to let them be T.V. and video game junkies. They going to have to do something constructive with value until they are out my house.

well said my friend, well said. This hobby takes patience and discipline. Even experienced growers have trouble sometimes. But just make sure that they know not to go around telling their friends at school what theyre doing lol, that would be interesting to hear on the news.

Oh,well then you go ahead stimulate the young minds! perhaps when their older they can try harder strains. But if you dont even grow psilocybin mushies, then thats youre jam man, more power to you. Cool to see someone whos true to the hobby rather than just true to the trippy life.

I grow wheat grass too hydroponically now instead of throwing the left overs away I'm going to dry and use the juiced grass in place of hay.

You may have some trouble with the Portabello. They're fairly hard to grow. Not trying to discourage you, but make sure to have lots of backups.

And don't expect much to come of your store clone. Those cultures are usually run as far as they can be.

That's what I'm looking for thanks for the heads up. Do ports do good on grain ? I know they love Manure and hay.

Have you considered maitake?(spelling) they are absolutely delicious and the yield is awesome. You can grow them right out of the jar even. Haha. When your kids get to be 16 you're gonna start seeing cube grain jars under their beds.

Sounds like bad luck with that Petri dish exposed to air for one second. In my microbiology labs (I took three micro labs and one molec cell lab that involved culturing bacteria at certain points) I was always curious about how far one could bend sterile procedure and would purposely deviate from good practices at times just to see what would happen. Maybe the spore loads in my labs were abnormally low but it seemed like you could leave a Petri dish uncovered for ten seconds and still not have anything bad happen. I am still vigilant about sterile technique because it is how I was trained to work and better safe than sorry but I feel like those experiments helped take away the anxiety I felt about potential contams.

NaH says you can bend the rules a bit sometimes if you're only keeping the cultures a few days. I wouldn't know about the long term impact too well. We only kept cultures alive for weeks four times or so and my sterile technique was very good in those instances.

I think so, I got them from a farmers market and where I am right now the temperatures and in the 10's so I don't see how else they would have grown them.
