I believe it's because the greater density and water content allows the entire to heat up at reasonable rate. That's just my theory. For whatever reason, steaming works with them.

What kind of contamination are you talking about?

There are few contaminants that have much chance of surviving even brief exposure to boiling temperatures. Generally 'under-sterilization' will result in Bacillus spp. of bacteria. Other contaminants are usually from contamination after sterilization.

That sounds more like mold than bacteria. Most commonly it happens during the inoculation, often from contaminated spores when doing a spore inoculation but there are other ways depending on your inoculation procedure. It can also be the result of a damaged or wet filter/dry verm layer.

Did you steam for a full 90 minutes? I used to only steam for 60 using the original pf tek and always got 100% success rate without a PC. Contamination can occur during inoculation or you could have had a contaminated spore syringe too.

Again, there is no need for fractional sterilization, but if you want to insist on taking 2 days to sterilize your jars go for it.
