Can coir be used in place of vermiculite in brf jars
    #19256176 - 12/10/13 04:21 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I was thinking it would give the mycelium an extra nutrition boost. Just as long as it's not packed too tight. Anyone ever tried this?

coir usually benifits from verm so i would say no, the tek doesn't need any more nutes it's already pushing it

No coir is not a replacement for vermiculite...I would use verm as well as coir if you wanted to experiment.

BRF cakes are already on the verge of being too nutritious...so no need to worry about that.

How about 50/50 verm/coir?

I'll try it with a 50/50 mix and post results.

Without BRF spores might have a hard time germinating....

I meant instead of using 100% verm use 50/50 verm/coir and add the brf.

No it can't. I can tell what would if you tried though because I've tried something similar . It flattens down into a solid mass pretty much.

Also coir isn't a replacement for a filter like a dry verm layer is.

Instead of using brf I'm going to grind brown rice into little pieces to try and avoid compaction.

You could just do whole brown rice and forget about adding coir or verm. You'd need a filter for the jar of course.

That might take a while to digest. I'll use a dry verm barrier.
