Self-Development * 5
    #19256092 - 12/10/13 04:03 PM (10 years, 1 month ago)

So I think for some time now I've been on a little bit of an inner quest towards peace and coming to terms with my whole sense of self. I think it's a natural part of growing older that people can either embrace or try to run away from.
I've come a long, long, long ways from the wreck I was about two years ago back so  whoo  :rocket:

Think tranquility, peace, open awareness, lsd, love, harmony, unity, softly-spoken words, gentle smiles, life vs. cocaine, heroin, meth, alcohol, hookers, guns, money, violence, struggle, robbery, yelling, death

The former of those things being representative of embracement/growth with the latter being escapism/degeneration. (Not that I was ever into any of the second-half of those examples)

Anyways, I'm wondering what ya'll here on the Shroomery feel about the whole idea of "finding yourself"? What is it that you value in life and are you thoroughly content with that? What do you REALLY care about? Who ARE you?

As an update, I've been totally on top of this shit

I'm sober the majority of the time, which gives my mind plenty of breathing room for learning and growing. I've been coming to terms with my full spectrum of emotions and thoughts, and working with the external world to put myself in a flow of harmony with others and whatever life  can throw at me

On an unstoppable flow towards eternal positivity, I'm moving on up and nothing's gonna stop me anytime soon

Just to get up that hill.
Now we're up in the big leagues,
Gettin' our turn at bat.

The other night I wrote a letter to myself describing all of my personality traits that I find admirable and good as a practice of harboring positivity and self-love

I've been meditating and cutting a lot of negative people out of my life.  and I'll find myself asking myself in certain situations whether my environment is benefiting me in anyway.

like if I'm on facebook for 30 minutes reading negative jive, I'll ask myself that and I'll immediately go on a walk or read.  Or if I'm at a friend's house and everyone's just playing videogames.  or if I'm listening to a friend complain about other people.

Our genes are already determined.  so the only things I have power over are my environment and how I choose to interpret it.  So I strive to have the most beneficial environment and mindset at all times.  Which calls for a lot of awareness.

Hey Sheekle, i totally get into self development. I got into it after my girlfriend and i broke up about a year and a half ago.
It's really cool seeing someone else who's also doing it but from a complete different prospective.
Personally i've just been developing better people and busness skills. I begun learning lots of psychology methods, and it's amazing how i've changed since then, and i'm quite sure i've only just begun on this adventure.

Good luck bro.

Who am I?
I am my awareness.

Everything else: my personality, my appearance, and my mind; are all the result of circumstances applied to biological systems.

People never know who they are because they die having identified with these material and superficial things that they had little-to-no control over.

"You", as others perceive your likeness, are not the direct creation of yourself but rather a series of conditioned habits that resulted from the experiences and circumstances you were born into once applied to your bodies genetic expression.

You are only your awareness. Nothing more.

And this awareness is shared in all living things.

Man attempts to distance himself from the encompassing cosmos simply because he is "self aware".
This is only a cognition that is the result of a developed cortex.
It betrays man as much as it blesses him.

Damage the brain in a particular way; and the human is no longer self aware, but is simply aware.  Some would call this a "vegetable".

So does a vegetable have a soul?

Well does it have an awareness?

In my eyes, they are the same thing.

The simplest thing that science currently cannot explain because it stems not from the material world.

self-improvement, Sheeks.
one cannot develop themselves, one simply develops.

choosing better decisions over bad ones you have making would be called self improvement, and you are thus developing yourself into a better person.

The tricky thing is that often the things that make us "happy" in the short term via sensory gratification eventually end up making us unhappy. I guess that's where wisdom comes into play. Wisdom mostly being gained by suffering.

happiness is true happiness,joy

not sense pleasure which is only temporary and which you need something for

happiness you can repeat and be equally happy again
if you once been happy in your life, you can often repeat that and be happy again

but yeah true, without knowing what is good or bad for you there is no way of navigating
learning from mistakes/suffering seems to be needed

everything happens only when we are ready it seems

a wise man is a man who has made many mistakes :-) and now tries to avoid making the same mistakes

here's a quote from Wyatt Woodsmall a famous speaker on  neurolinguistics. he said:
"In order to improve your self, you have to become not your self."
I really like this quote. he's referring to how ego can get in the way of self development and how a person needs to be willing to do things differently instead of identifying them selves with their previous behaviour/thoughts

when meditating/living in touch with nature, the self improves itself

the self knows exactly what it must do

meditate to become oneself
walk in nature, psytrance/trance is great too

it is the love we have forgotten often
love for oneself, love for all things

anything that brings back that love will help

as john lennon said:
dance for peace, breathe for peace, eat for peace, make love for peace ;-)

Self-improvement is a poor goal for most of us.  We resolve every New Year's to lose that extra fifteen pounds by going to the gym every day, to quit drinking beer after we get home from work, etcetera etc... and a month later we're back to our same old habits and destructive routines.  Sure, improvements are possible to one's lifestyle and they can make you a little happier.

But there's something far more worthwhile than self-improvement out there.  It's called self-acceptance, and it's the key to lasting happiness.  Being able to accept who you are, with all of your shortcomings and negative personality traits, is infinitely preferable to trying (and failing) to change yourself into an impossible ideal of the ego-created concept that is perfection.

Duh.  Acceptance is necessary before self-improvement is truly possible or most efficient, however, and most people have much more trouble with self-acceptance than with anything else, IMO.

I disagree, self acceptance is part of self improvement, but it doesn't stop there, although it is the biggest step for some. Once you have accepted your self, you need yo identify not what you dislike about your self, but workout what you like about others and then logically considering why you couldn't have that too, and then if it seems you can logically have it, taking steps to achieve it.
I put that in a metaphorically view with physical possession, but it applies to nonphysical things, including state of mind too.

this is how i understand the goal of life to be

recognition, acceptance, improve

you can't improve something until you accept the current conditions. you can't accept the current conditions until you recognize them

I have to agree with accepting oneself before improving upon it, and before that, recognition. You need to realize that your current situation/ beliefs/ paradigms/ etc are an accumulation of all your past experiences. Who you are right now is a reflection of your past in a way. Once you recognize that you can accept who you are at the present moment and then decide to make improvements on yourself.

Victims of circumstance, past and present.

accept oneself
accept others
accept everything as is

everything starts with oneself, love and accept oneself
and if that is not possible, realize why that is so

if we cannot accept ourself we must be doing something wrong

unconditional acceptance, unconditional love :-)

So earlier today I was driving around by myself and looking off into the distance while some classic Grateful Dead tunes filled my ears and heart with warmth. I had the thought that self-development is mainly just like undoing the false development that we thought we were supposed to be doing all our lives. Untangling the web of deception and illusion which the world has suggested the way things should be, and coming back to terms with one's natural state of being.

but how do aspirations weave into self-development?

i think when one comes to accept the current circumstances, one becomes more inclined to act towards fulfilling such aspirations.

it would be more difficult to do so if you're caught up in the "what could be's" of life

cuz then ur spending all ur time thinking of what to do, instead of actually doin

:mindblown:

think positive, glass is half full not half empty

everything is what you think it is

that seems to go hand in hand with acceptance
