Four on bottom & two on top. So one on each side at substrate depth (4), and then one at the top of each short side (2)?

i'm kinda in the same boat as UnknownPerson but i was just wondering how large of a tub you can do with this method. is there eventually a size that will throw the RH and other factors out of wack or is it always close to self contained as long as the guidelines are followed.

it gets harder to maintain conditions as you go above the standard 66 qt

Is a 2 inch diameter appropriate?

I am planning on doing a 3 inch substrate depth. And possibly casing. So if my holes are around 3.25 inches high, and I end up not using a casing layer will the slight difference even matter?

it depends on the depth of your substrate in said container, the deeper the sub the more RH. i tried to get 66qt tubs but cant find any with clear lids .

What sub depth do you typically use? I have only done one small mono ever and it was successful. I only did two flushes. This depth was only about 1.75 in. Now that I have been reading a lot I am ready to step things up. Anyways I am about to measure and make my holes, so do you think 3 inches is solid?

Hello. I just finished my first attempted mono tub with great success! But I know I did a few things wrong, and my WBS jars are almost done, so I didn't want to make a mistake again. Firstly, I didn't use a liner. I will be using several of the totes pictured above. I have seen so many different mono tub designs in regards to hole placement and size, so I wanted to ask which do you think would be best specifically with this size tote? Where would you put the holes, and with what diameter? I wasn't sure how specific the holes needed to be in placement and size? Size I believe 2 in in diameter is appropriate for this size, correct? I was thinking two holes on each of the long sides at substrate depth, and two close to the top. Then for the short sides one at substrate level, and then one more up top.
Do I want the bottom of the substrate level holes to be exactly at substrate level, or very slightly above? I believe I would want them very slightly above the substrate level. It might seem obvious, but I think this time around I am going to use a casing layer (not positive) but I would want to include that in the substrate depth, correct?
Then my second question was regarding a quality analog hygrometer. I have read through many hygrometer forums, and none of the links were still active. I went to three different cigar shops today and they only had digital. Does anyone have a suggestion for one on amazon? http://www.amazon.com/Mantello-Cigars-Analog-Hygrometer/dp/B0085EJNAQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386714852&sr=8-1&keywords=analog+hygrometer
What about this one? If not could someone send me a link for a quality hygrometer on amazon.
EDIT: For my successful monotub I spawned to coir/verm and I intend to do the same for these monotubs. I have three of these totes that I will make into mono's and one that is already a sgfc. I am not sure if it was a stupid idea, but for using the wbs in the SGFC can I mix the colonized grain with coir/verm as I did before a 1:2 ratio, and put this mixture back inside a jar to colonize. then birth it like a cake and put it in the SGFC?

Shoot for a depth of 3.5-4"

just dont drill holes in your tub until you have mixed up your sub/spawn, let it colonize and then add your holes.
then after that use the same ratio and your holes will be in the perfect spot everytime.

just lay some bubble wrap down on your sub while you drill(you casn use anything i just wanted to bubble wrap to serve a purpose in a mono )

I don't think for me at least it would be smart to cut them after letting colonize. I don't have a drill and actually use this type of hobbyist wood burner kit. Its basically a soldering iron that has many interchangeable tips. With the smoke/plastic burning I wouldn't feel comfortable.

Bubble wrap is actually a good idea! Well I used a substrate calculator, and have a perfect amount of colonized spawn to do a 1:2 wbs : coir/verm ratio filling these three totes 3 inches

trust me myc is very forgiving and if you use this
only a few shards of plastic may fall on your substrate and it wont hurt anything and your holes will be guaranteed to be in the right spot every batch you make.

ive sprayed my whole substrate down with alcohol once instead of water on accident, second flush came in right as rain.
just sayin a few shards of plastic aint gonna hurt nothing

I am going to look for one of those drill bits tomorrow at lowes. What is the diameter? Also I only have a crappy drill. Would this easily cut through with a not so powerful drill? I am sure I can find one to borrow from someone.

1" i do believe, you may want to go bigger if youre using bigger monotubs. its called a hole saw and with these bits they catch the disc you drill out of your tub so it doesnt fall onto your sub.
