My first woodlover...P. Allenii UPDATED pic and questions...
    #19255391 - 12/10/13 01:18 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

This jar will be a master jar for g2g transfers...once I have lots of spawn I plan to inoculate an outdoor bed of woodchips.... once I have my first fruits I will use stem butts to create NATURALIZED spawn from dowel plugs....with luck...this jar will result in endless sacred psilocybes. :pipesmoke:

Thats a fun one! I got fruits in late fall from a spring incoculation last sprng, although the slugs got my first ones in the ground and then the deep freeze kicked in and fucked it all up.
Its a super vigorous species, its rad, you will enjoy the experience.

Heres a few that came up in my bonsai tree as well

This master jar is coming along nicely...I have a question though... should I expand my grain spawn of this? Or should I start producing cardboard spawn? perhaps dowel spawn? My thinking is that the spring season is still a few months away and this jar is almost ready. Doing pure grain spawn g2g would be fine but I was thinking about what Stamets calls "naturalized spawn" where you produce your spawn in a non sterile environment... in essence vaccinating it for the microbial community that exists where your grow will be. Do you guys think spawning this to a box of wooden dowels or cardboard would result in naturalized spawn? The area I live in is very similar to the pac NW in terms of climate...if I can naturalize my spawn for this region...then perhaps I can play Johnny mushroom spore all over my town? Thoughts?

It may be beneficial to introduce some of the sub into the jar before you spawn it to wood sub. I don't have any experience with wood lovers just a thought.

and for the second part if there is appropriate sub in your area for the species I would think it will work.

Ya it doesnt matter. I make a grain jar or 2 then go straight to chips. Then let it expand, then when you have some chip spawn you can keep expanding for ever.

Can one of you point me to a few teks or if OP doesn't mind and if you don't mind. Can you explain your "system" for outdoor species including the type of wood you use with certain species. I live in WI and I'm hoping to have a few outdoor beds if I can get them to survive winter. I'm still technically in zone 5 but its pretty close. Also any tips like sites to find out what a species prefers for wood sub. or do you just use Google?

Sorry still learning on the outdoors and I apologize for the noob question and thread jack but what is a spring soak? Also you suggest alder what else have you used with with success and where do you get your hard woods? Pet store right? Last one how many transfers after grain do you do before going outside? Example grain ---> alder in bags or tubs ---> to alder outside OR grain ---> alder outside. Again sorry for the questions and thread jack OP.
I'll check him out anyone else you recommend?

now mix the grains in the unsterilzed chips in flowerpots and leave those bastards outdoors.
P azurescen or any of the other vigorous woodies will eat that up . keep taking spawn and making new flower pots all year long.

the one issue with fresh azurescen or subaeruginosa or allenii or what ever grain spawn is rats and mice go bananas for that shit. so i stack the pots up and put wire mesh around the bottom holes of the bottommost pot to prevent the fuckers from chewing in and raiding your spawn!

the process takes a good 6 months to 2 years from agar to patch to fruit. so its only for those with patience.:thumbup:

After getting schooled by psylosymonreturns, I did this^.
It works like a charm and it's also colonizing way faster outside.
As a precaution I kept about 4-5 liter colonizing spawn indoors in two totes and they are not even close to colonizing at the same speed as the clay pots outside.

Some good info...thanks guys...I think maybe I'll pre-made bags of sawdust spawn from a vendor until spring, then use the sawdust spawn to knock up wood chips outside? How does that sound?

Why do you have to pasteurize or sterilize chips when you keep them indoors and psylo do they have to be clay pots or can plastic etc. Be used.

So psilosymon, how do you "water" your pots?

it depends.
When I am generating spawn, when I have the pots stacked up, you dont have to water. You keep a dummy pot filled with wet soil on top to keep the vermin out anyways and then all the pots below with chip spawn just stay hydrated.

It only takes a month or so and the pots should be half way colonized. Dont wait, just take the half colonized pots and break them up and mix with more chips in bigger pots. If myc is sitting against the side its a waste. Like Stamets talks about mycelium running, breaking up half colonized pots and continually getting bigger and bigger is myc sprinting!

At this point vermin are no issue as the grain has done its job, so you dont really have to stack the pots. But its good for hydration like I said and takes up less space so I still stack. You could be taking handfuls of chip spawn at this point and noccing up what ever.

My bonsais that I fruit from stay in the garden and get watered lightly all the time in the summer. Other than that they sit in the shade, I live in a wet place.
