another case of dry mono tub walls for you guys...
    #19254805 - 12/10/13 10:57 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

so my two first mini-monos are in fruiting now, and I've noticed that I'm having trouble keeping the walls of the monos moist.  they dried up within the first day, so I misted them and tightened the polyfill quite a bit (tight as I can make it on the bottom, decently tight on the top- not almost falling out as many suggest). I was honestly worried that they wouldn't get enough FAE if anything, but that doesn't appear to be the case, as the walls are continuing to dry...  I've had to mist them most days they've been in fruiting despite the tightened polyfill, and even if the mist doesn't evaporate quickly, no new condensation forms...  also, 2 of the walls consistently dry up fast and the other two hold their moisture for a bit longer.  is having 2 walls dry, 2 walls wet an indication of too much FAE or is it okay?  should I be worried about any of this, and maybe tape one of the bottom holes on each side?

more info: 20 qt tubs, 4 holes at sub level and 2 holes above like a classic mono. I did make the holes 1 1/4" which maybe is a bit big for such a small tub?  no fan running in the room because it is shared with an SGFC, and I live in a very dry climate as well, RH seems to hover between 30 and 35%, occasionally up to 40 and above but a few times has dipped to the high 20s.

condensation is caused by a temp diffrence, is your room real warm?
with no fan i'd keep your top holes loose

I have been monitoring my own mini-mono, and a question was asked about my current rh%.  I got out my hygrometer, and found that the air was around 20% rh in the room, but the mini mono has 80% humidity @ 6" above substrate level.  Condensation will only happen on the walls of a chamber due to a temp difference.  Much like "sweat" on the outside of a gin and tonic in the summer.  I would go so far as to say that a proper monotub will have no issue, but if you are concerned, find a cheap analog hygrometer and check it out.  You may be surprised.  I hypothesize that the closer I move the hygrometer to the surface of the substrate, the higher the humidity should be IF the holes are plugged to spec.

I have read a few users commenting on low RH% and needing to mist a bit here and there this time of year.

Plugging the top holes tight will certainly increase RH% but will decrease FAE and evaporation.  I do mini-monos pretty regular, and found that misting lightly is almost necessary due to the low volume of mass.  A larger substrate should be able to maintain conditions on its own much better.  I would advise to certainly use light amounts of poly in your top holes.

What size tub would be considered a mini tub?

Should there be a "mid-mono" lol. (No there should not...we got enough terms as it is)

I don't know if there is a concise view on it.  I am thinking that if you approach cultivation with the intent to do something small, that would be a mini.  I use only one quart of spawn per 6qt "tub".  Most of my "bulk substrates" never break the 5 total quart mark.

Its only a mini if you define it as such.

Seriously, I've got nothing else.  Your guess is better than mine.

no, my temps fluctuate between 68-72 around the tubs usually.  never below 66 or above 73 as far as I've seen...

bump.  loosened polyfill on top holes.  walls drying up every 24-48 hours.  should I mist more to compensate?  misting/fanning once every 28-48 hours currently, as walls dry out pretty much, first tub has been in there for around a week and showing no sign of pinning.
