I'm guessing you noc'd em up with MS since you're just coming back.

I've never done this, only used live cultures (agar) to inoculate them.

I'd guess it would take awhile to colonize but at 3 weeks you should see some decent growth.

How many qts of rye are you using in your bags?

Are you sure you're seeing metabolites and not bacteria?

No one has a clue how long your genetics will take to colonize your rye bag.

Multispore is always a crapshoot.

Is there any healthy growth?

How much colonization is there? Pics?

Did you shake/knead the grains to separate them? If so how long ago?

Metabolites are a sign of contams.....what was your sterile procedure like?

I'd go ahead and chuck that one and start a new project.

Jars are easier than bags IMO.

Might want to run some of them til you get your technique down again.

I think they're  both relatively easy, it just depends on your sterile technique and procedure.
I've heard some say that bags are easier for the convenience of less jars, yet some say it's easier with jars than bags. To each his own.

happened to me with one of my bags, how far did you inject into the bag?  I stuck the needle far too deep and it took forever to see signs of growth since it was all deep within the bag.  broke one up to discover this, that bag never quite recovered, had a lot of moisture, and started smelling terrible. sounds kind of like your situation...  but you'll know if you have to toss the bag, the filter patch will smell disgusting...
