Motherboard Failed?
    #19249404 - 12/09/13 10:18 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

The power supply works when I rig P1 & P2 connector up with a paperclip to complete the circuit.  Then when I plug in the 4 pin 12v power connector to my motherboard the power supply still works.  However when I take out the paperclip and plug P1 & P2 connector to the motherboard the power supply doesn't work anymore. This motherboard was made in 2008 and had significant use before causing problems to me before I disassembled the computer down to parts.  Is it safe to conclude my motherboard has failed?  :stoned:

It could either be your motherboard or your power supply. Using a paperclip is really bad idea, you could cause short circuits and god knows what else.

My gut feeling says its your motherboard.

It's not exactly safe to conclude the mobo has failed without further testing or swapping hardware etc..

Does the mobo have any audible beeps when you are trying to boot, or LEDs on it?
Have you tried clearing the CMOS?

If it persists, best way to test is start stripping it down to the bare essentials - remove everything but the CPU+heatsink, 1 stick of memory, GPU, 4/8 Pin CPU power and 24pin power to the motherboard. Unplug everything else.. test and see if you get any beeps or LEDs. If you have multiple memory sticks try testing them individually one at a time, in different slots, although your mobo should have a 'primary' memory slot depending what kind of board it is.

If it still happens, test it outside of the case.. remove it from the case and put on a non-conductive surface (non-polished wooden table, cardboard, etc) and test with just the bare essentials plugged in as above. Also might want to reseat the CPU and inspect the socket for any bent or damaged pins, and if everything looks good, reseat CPU and heatsink.

i recently pulled out the cmos battery and checked it using a led.  It lit fine.  I have 1 bent pin on the CPU but I bent it back to normal position.  My original problem that I thought caused the computer to be broken was the cpu fan wasn't spinning.  The paperclip trick was suggested to test power supply turning on, which it does when powered up alone.  Ok, I'll spill the guts onto a plastic desk and start from the bottom up.  I haven't tested it this thoroughly yet.  Thanks.

Bent pin could be the cause of the issue possibly even if you fixed it, they are pretty sensitive. But yeah best bet is to strip it from the case and test it that way.. help remove the possibility of any kind of grounding issue or the board shorting out on something. If it still happens in "barebones" then it's likely it could be the board since the PSU tests fine by itself.

Yeah totally.  I just got done testing it bare bones and still no response.  Because I had the motherboard failure before I accidentally bent a pin slightly I'm going to conclude the motherboard died.  I think the bent pin is now back in alignment.  I'll give a heads up if a new motherboard doesn't fix the problem.

To test further I took a multimeter to the ATX plug (24 pin) and the 12v 4 pin connector.  All but one pin reads correctly.  The voltage on pin 14 reads -11.2 instead of -12.  Is that close enough?  I realized after unplugging motherboard from tower that I disconnected the on/off switch button that would be on the front panel of tower. So I put a jumper over the pw (power) header and was able to get 1 beep after supplying power.  The video card and cpu fan start up as well, but then after 3 seconds the power supply turns off along with everything else.  Could it be I have a bad cpu or memory?  Once I briefly powered the computer without a cpu fan.  The cpu got really hot before shutting off.  I only did that a couple time, but maybe fried the cpu.  Any ideas or tips to further testing?

Look up the beep codes for your bios. For example  one beep on an AMI bios indicates a problem with your DRAM.

how do i know what bios i have without getting to that screen?  Does the motherboard specs show this value?  I was thinking 1 quick beep is passing POST.  Am I wrong?  Seems like power gets cut for split second prior to beep.

You are testing voltages without a load, which isn't going to give you the full picture.

Think of a car that runs fine in neutral, but as soon as you put it in gear and try to drive up a hill, it dies.

If you have a bad semiconductor in the power supply, it will often work when there is no load, but fail to operate correctly when forced to do some work.

Unplug the cord from the power supply to the wall, wait a few minutes, then plug it back in.  Does the computer turn on by itself?  If so, you have a power button (on the case) that is stuck in the "on" position.

That is because I put a jumper pin over the pw header to override the power button on the case with a closed circuit.  Then I was just counting on using the power supply's switch button to control on/off.

Ok I took your advice and replaced jumper with push button.  It works! Power isn't turning off.  I see what was happening now.  It was like I held in the power button without letting go.
