Just curious how hard it is to culture and more specifically how hard is it to find when leaving grain to rot to find it?

it dosnet grow on rotting grain. it grows on flowering grain. its more of a mutual relationship, it actually dosent hurt the host plant that much at all. and depending on what Claviceps your looking for will determine where youll look. if you live in an area where ergot is common, I'd start looking when the host plant is starting to flower and look for sticky secretions on the grain heads. or go looking around harvest time for the sclerotia

If you're in an area where grains can grow, plant a 50 pound bag or two of organic rye berries and see what happens. RR

Not if you're driving a car with CA plates. You'll suffer an armed robbery at the hands of the Tijuana Police. RR

I have AZ plates will that be a problem?
How much did you pay for it?
I dont have a problem growing it , but I would prefer not to so I dont contaminate my house.
Can I grow them in AZ , I didnt think I could due to the lack of humidity here , I was planning on growing a patch maybe 2 square feet outside

Just run a sprinkler a time or two every day.
You better plan on at least 1000 square feet if you hope to get any sclerotia. They don't form on most of the stalks. RR

hey RR will C. paspali grow on rye? I know it isn't its natural host but knowing the claviceps species infects open pollenated like rye... if it were intentionally infected would it take?

It might prove difficult since it is slightly biotrophic, host specific, and has several life stages. It might help to infuse your agar with rye stigmas.

both purpurea and paspali will grow on agar. paspali dosent like to sporulate on PDA but will form honeydew on specialized agar recipes, from what ive read. although infusing agar with stigmas sounds interesting. thanks for the idea!
